Today we’re talking BALL SKILLS! 🏐

Ball skills require more advanced motor planning and coordination, as they require multiple parts of the body to team up and work together! When kids start exploring these movements their bodies look a little disconnected and they may only move the main limb that’s doing the skill. Today, we’re talking about how the skills progress!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Kicking:
⚽ Stepping through the ball to push it forward
⚽ Starting to step forward with opposite leg, and using dominant leg to kick without fully straightening it
⚽ Starting to demonstrate arm movement with a kick
⚽ Full maturity: extended leg, arm movement, AND trunk rotation!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Throwing:
⚾ Only arm involvement, standing in place
⚾ Wind up, trunk rotation, feet still in place
⚾ Wind up, trunk rotation, step through with the SAME leg
⚾ Full maturity: wind up, trunk rotation, step through with OPPOSITE leg
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Catching:
🏈 Starts with ready arms and traps the ball against their body (like a hug!)
🏈 Moves from trapping to catching with two hands
🏈 Full maturity: always catching cleanly with two hands
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Typically, we see full maturity of ball skills around 6-7 years old. However, these can sometimes be challenging for kids who have coordination difficulties. Physio can help by breaking down each step and working on the specific parts of each skill!

Thank you for the great post!

Coordination is such an important part of our lives - and it’s often so integrated in all that we do, we don’t even realize the tasks at hand depend on it!

Many gross motor skills such as running, jumping, climbing stairs, and catching a ball, require the coordinated movement of some or many body parts. Knowing where to place hands, when to move which foot, how to brake quickly, or when to swing a bat can all be really tricky skills for a child who has difficulty with coordinated movement. The upper body, trunk, and/or lower body need to learn to work together to produce smooth and efficient (coordinated) movement.

Not to mention... so many daily tasks require coordination, like brushing teeth, tying shoes, cutting with scissors, and printing at school. It’s a lot!

Physiotherapy can help promote motor learning by breaking tasks down into smaller, more manageable actions for children to practice. We can get creative in teaching brand new skills and helping kids work towards being more confident in all that they do!

Do any of these sound like your child? If so, maybe consider connecting with a physiotherapist near you!

Let’s talk about concussions 🧠

Concussions and injuries to the head can occur in skiing or snowboarding from a collision into others, falls or crashing into trees or ice 🤕. Concussions are not always caused by a direct hit to the head 👤, and they can also be caused by impact 💢 to the body.

Common symptoms include: ⚡️headaches
⚡️nausea
⚡️vomiting
⚡️dizziness
⚡️balance issues
⚡️blurred and/or double vision
⚡️ sensitivity to light and/or sound

Kids Physio has Complete Concussion certified physios with further education and training in evidence-based concussion rehabilitation. Our Complete Concussion physios will start with an assessment, then devise a treatment plan for a safe return to learning, play and sport protocol to get you back on the slopes 👍🏼

Shoulder injuries are very common in slope sports, and often occur when a skiier or snowboarder puts out their hands during a fall. If this happens at high enough speed, the impact can cause a fracture of the upper arm or a separation/dislocation of the AC joint (where the collarbone and shoulder meet).

MCL and ACL sprains are the most common injury in skiiers and snowboarders, as with the ankle held firmly in a boot, it is more likely that a fall can result in a twisting or hyperextension of the knee, leading to risk of partial or complete tear of the ligaments.

It is important to get these injuries checked out by a medical professional, as they may require X-ray to rule out a fracture and further medical attention to address the injury!

❄️ Winter Play Idea: Fort Building Fun!

Building a fort isn't just a boredom buster – it's a fantastic way to support your child's development! 🌟 Creating a cozy fort offers a calming space for reading or even a nap (if we're lucky 😉). The process of constructing it is where the magic happens!

From carrying blankets (providing calming input) to solving the puzzle of how to build it, this activity is a powerhouse of sensory and cognitive benefits!
