Alissa Martens memories

My Great Uncle and Great Aunt were just that. Great. They were great at having patience with me, Great at teaching me new things, Great at telling stories. From Uncle Ken's u.f.o stories, Lee's stories of teaching, sharing her love of literature with me. I still have the copy of pride and prejudice she gave me the summer I spent out there. And Uncle Ken's love of Canadian Tire. The summer I was out there they taught me how to ride a bike so I could get to work at the bakery. And in true form to their giving hearts they bought me a bike. But not just a basic bike, no it had to be the best and price wasn't an issue. I wasn't used to that. I remember Uncle Ken and I would have are arguments, and he would look at me, say "your just like Al". His brother my papa. I turned to him and said, papa says I'm just like. Well that made us laugh and ended our argument. Oh so many stories, so many memories. I can't wait to see them again and hear their new stories. P.S I still like to cook my broccoli with caraway seed thanks to Aunt Lee.

A Message from a friend Rennie Roop

Every Christmas and birthday, for decades, I’d get long, handwritten letters from Lee at Christmas and for my birthday in June. I lived with Lee in Victoria Beach for the 1975-76 school year. We were both teachers at Grand Marais School.
I eventually moved on to New Brunswick, Quebec, West Africa, NB, Vancouver, NB, China and back to NB. While met and married Ken, and moved to the Kelowna area. I visited Ken and Lee twice while they lived in Kelowna. I even helped them pick out a condo and helped them downsize for their move. Ken gave me a lovely painting that he did of two prairie grain elevators, which still hangs on my wall. I may be a Maritime transplant, but in my heart of hearts, I’m still a prairie girl.

A year ago, another Manitoba teacher friend passed away and I only found out when my Christmas card was returned, marked “deceased”. So I talked to Lee and told her that she needed a list of people to contact in case of her death. She assured me that she did have a list with 5 names of her oldest and dearest friends. I was the youngest one on the list by at least 20 years!

Lee was a guiding spirit and support throughout all of my life. Rest In Peace, my dear friend. And no more tabletop imaginary keyboard. Play those ivories with strong, flexible fingers and renewed passion. ♥️
