Our thoughts shape our reality, our story affects how we feel and move forward in the world. How often have you noticed that the exact same event is interpreted differently by different people?
Sometimes I like to play with my interpretation of events, to have "psychological flexibility" with my story and then observe how a different interpretation makes me feel differently. Even something as common as being cut off in traffic--I can choose to see the event as intentional and rude, or I can think the other person didn't see me, is elderly or is someone heading to an emergency. It doesn't change what happened, but it does change how I feel which in turn can affect my day going forward.
Here's a useful acronym regarding thoughts:
T=is is true? Is there another way to see it?
H=is it helpful to myself or others to see it this way?
I=is it inspiring? Will this thought inspire me to feel better or to take action?
N=is it needed or necessary? Is this something I can let go of if it isn't helping me?
K=is it kind? Compassion for self and others is a gift, and kind thoughts bring optimism and hope.
