Hormones play a much bigger role in our health than most people realize and when they’re optimized, the ripple effect can be profound.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) isn’t just about symptom relief (though it can be life-changing for that). It’s also about long-term prevention and healthy aging.

Here are 5 powerful, evidence-informed benefits of BHRT:

✨ May reduce risk of heart disease by up to 50%
✨ May reduce risk of osteoporosis by up to 50%
✨ May support Alzheimer’s prevention by 40–50%
✨ May reduce colon cancer risk by 30–40%
✨ May increase longevity by 3–5 years

When hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are balanced appropriately, they support brain function, bone density, cardiovascular health, and metabolic resilience.

BHRT uses hormones that are structurally identical to what your body naturally produces, allowing for a more personalized and physiologic approach to care.

That said, hormone therapy is not one-size-fits-all. The key is individualized assessment, proper testing, and ongoing monitoring to ensure safety and effectiveness. BHRT is available in a variety of delivery methods, including creams, capsules, patches, and more, allowing for a personalized approach that suits your needs.

If you’ve been feeling “off,” or you’re thinking more proactively about aging well, this is a conversation worth having.

Depression treatment is evolving and research continues to support lifestyle medicine.

A 2025 systematic review published in Frontiers in Psychology, found that resistance training specifically reduced depressive symptoms in adults with diagnosed depression

Strength training isn’t just for muscle. It impacts brain chemistry, inflammation, stress, resilience, and confidence.

I approach mental health through an integrative lens, combining evidence based medicine with lifestyle interventions that support long-term healing.

If you’re navigating depression, burnout, or low mood, you are not alone. 💙

Food emulsifiers may have a harmful impact on gut health. These common additives (often found in ultra-processed foods) can influence the gut microbiome and the integrity of the intestinal barrier. Emerging research is linking their intake to increased inflammation and gastrointestinal symptoms.

Myth: “You can’t be anaemic if you’re menopausal.”

Truth: We regularly see and treat iron deficiency in women of all ages here at Mind Body Soul. Yes, even menopausal women.

Iron deficiency isn’t only linked to menstruation. It can also be affected by:
• Gut absorption issues
• Chronic inflammation
• Diet
• Thyroid and hormone changes

Signs your iron may be low:
• Ongoing fatigue or feeling “drained”
• Shortness of breath with simple activity
• Hair thinning or brittle nails
• Dizziness or headaches
• Feeling cold often

If this sounds familiar, ask your doctor to check your iron levels. It’s a simple test that can rule this out as a cause of how you’re feeling and something we assess and support regularly in practice, including with iron infusions when appropriate.

You don’t have to assume this is “just menopause”.

This is a very simple and adaptable recipe for chia seed pudding. Its ingredients are so versatile you can adjust and make it however you like, but I do enjoy this dreamy coconut version that I tried when I was on Waikiki beach, in Oahu, Hawaii.

INGREDIENTS

1 1/4 cup coconut milk or cream from a can (shake well before opening)
1 1/4 cup coconut milk, silk or other brand
1/3 cup Chia seeds
1/3 cup shredded, unsweetened, coconut, toasted (optional)
2 tablespoon of maple syrup
1.5 teaspoon vanilla extract

TOPPING

1/2 cup blue blueberries, or raspberries
1/4 cup (or less) cacao nibs

INSTRUCTIONS

Add all ingredients to a medium mixing bowl and stir well. I typically use a 4 cup Pyrex glass jar with a pouring spout.
Divide between six small jam jars (about 2/3 cup or 160 ml each) and top with cacao nibs & fruit. Cover and chill in the fridge for at least four hours.

Enjoy for breakfast, afternoon, snack or dessert!

Hair loss in women may be more common than you think!

Hair loss in women is becoming all too common, sometimes affecting women in their 30s or 40s.

Common reasons behind hair loss may include:

➖ Stress may lead to a “a hair blow out,” which can occur between four and twelve weeks following a stressful event such as a death, a divorce, an illness, a job change, etc.
➖ Thyroid issues – Hyperthyroid and Hypothyroid states.
➖ Estrogen, Testosterone or DHEA.
➖ Anemia, especially iron deficiency anemia, but also macrocytic anemia.
➖ Infections of the skin and scalp.
➖ Poor Digestive function.
➖ Inflammation – muscle pain, joint pain, and eating inflammatory foods.
➖ Blood sugar dysregulation. Blood sugar elevations will theoretically “gum-up” the tiny little capillaries in the scalp that nourish your hair follicles and prevent nutrients from reaching the hair follicles.

The good news is once the underlying cause of hair loss is identified, natural solutions for hair loss can be simple and effective, including:

✅ Eating a diet rich in nutrients, rich in fibre and high in vegetables.
✅ Eliminating or avoiding foods that cause reactions, as these increase inflammation and worsen hair loss.
✅ Incorporating topical treatments that you can practice at home a few times a week.
✅ Labs testing including CBC for a complete blood marker, Iron, or Comprehensive Dried Urine Hormone Test help to ascertain what the underlying cause of your hair loss.
✅ Taking vitamins and supplements, such as Zinc, Collagen powders, Bone Broth, Biotin and Silica, or Alpha lipoic acid.

If you are experiencing some form of hair loss, speak with your doctor to help determine the underlying cause is.

If you are still struggling and would like to speak to us about your hair loss, please book an appointment so we can help you get back on track and back to having beautiful healthy hair and a beautiful healthy you!

Ready for Fall soups? 🍲🍂 The Roasted Cauliflower and Pear Soup is surprisingly easy, delicious and full of flavour.

I find most blended soups to be too heavy, thick and filling. This one is light, fruity, and easy on the stomach and taste buds!

Made with whole foods that are easy to find this time of year. This soup is a nice change of pace from all the turkey, stuffing, sweets and heavy foods.

Served with a delightful salad made with refreshing fennel to aid digestion and left over hazelnuts. Finished with a shallot, honey dressing.

Soup Ingredients 🍲
1 tbsp butter (grass fed, organic)
1 shallot
1 clove garlic
1 head of cauliflower, cut into bite size pieces
2 medium potatoes, chopped
3 small-medium pears ( I chose comice pears because they’re nice and sweet, and in season)
1/2 cup of hazelnuts
4 cups water
2 tsp thyme
salt/pepper

Directions:
1. Roast cauliflower at 300 degrees for 20 minutes.
2. Melt butter in large pot, add shallots and garlic and cook until softened. Add potatoes and cook until they are just tender (but not too much). Add spices and salt and pepper. Add the water and add hazelnuts, pears and roasted cauliflower.
3. Bring to boil and then let simmer for 10 minutes.
4. In stages, blend in high speed blender until smooth or if you’re lucky and have a hand blender, blend right in the pot.
5. If blended in blender, put back in pot and taste to see if it needs more salt or spices.
6. Serve with sliced pears, chopped hazelnuts and fennel fronds.

Salad 🥗
Greens
One small fennel bulb
Chopped hazelnuts

Chop the fennel (remove the core). Place all ingredients in bowl and serve with shallot, honey dressing.

Shallot Honey Dressing 🥗
1/2 tsp shallots, chopped
2 tsp honey
1/2 cup olive oil
Whisk ingredients together, adjust to taste.
Enjoy!

This is a great recipe to make and portion out into single serving containers for quick lunches or dinners.

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I can order more comprehensive testing to give you a more detailed look into what's happening in an effort to identify the root cause of symptoms, and problems you're experiencing.

Comprehensive tests may include:

1️⃣ SIBO Breath Test: When symptoms of IBS, constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, abdominal pain, and/or reflux/heartburn become chronic, but an underlying cause has yet to be identified, a Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) breath test can help determine if bacterial overgrowth is the issue.

2️⃣ Food Sensitivity & Allergy Tests: Unidentified food sensitivities can contribute to many chronic health conditions. With a blood test, we evaluate if there are any true allergy (IgE-mediated) responses in the body to certain foods, or sensitivities (IgG-mediated) causing skin or digestive symptoms.

3️⃣ Comprehensive Stool Analysis & Parasitology: Pinpoint the cause of gastrointestinal symptoms and chronic systemic conditions, including persistent diarrhea, constipation, bloating, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome and malabsorption. And measure key markers of digestion, absorption and inflammation.

4️⃣ Urine Hormone Testing: Consider the 24-hour urine sample as an annual “tune-up” on your hormone status. Whether you are struggling with fertility, weight gain, menopause symptoms or andropause (male-menopause), this comprehensive test covers the s*x hormones, adrenal hormones and thyroid health.
