Please note that the COHA office will be closed on Monday, September 1 in observance of Labour Day.

Labour Day has been celebrated in Canada since the late 1800s as a tribute to the rights, safety, and contributions of workers. It reminds us of the importance of dedication, care, and community — values that remain at the heart of the work we do every day at COHA.

We are grateful for our staff, volunteers, and community partners who give so much of themselves to support individuals and families through life’s most tender moments.

Wishing you a safe and restorative long weekend.

We are so grateful to the Provincial Employees Community Services Fund (PECSF) and the many BC Public Service employees who chose to support COHA through your employee-funded donations campaign.

Your generosity helps ensure that no one in our community has to face end-of-life or grief alone. These contributions make it possible for us to provide compassionate care and support—free of financial or social barriers—to those who need it most.

From all of us at the Central Okanagan Hospice Association (COHA), thank you for walking alongside us in this important work.

🌿 Community Partnership in Action: Thank You, RBC

COHA was delighted to welcome a dedicated team from RBC to Hospice House for a day filled with care, connection, and community spirit. The team rolled up their sleeves for a garden clean-up, then joined everyone for a summer BBQ lunch.

Along with giving their time and energy, RBC generously donated $1,500 to help COHA supplement the food services at Hospice House for some added comfort and flavours – including our weekly tea cart service and special themed lunches, pizza nights and celebratory occasions for connection with patients, families and visitors.

This was a wonderful chance to show the RBC team how their contributions help create warm, memorable experiences for those we serve. We are deeply grateful for their generosity, time, and commitment to compassionate care.

🔥 Fire Smart This August! 🔥

Don’t be fooled by the cooler days this past week with the lovely rain we received: fire risk across B.C. remains high to extreme, especially with ongoing drought conditions and lightning activity.

The Drought Hill fire near Peachland (now held) is a clear reminder that even small sparks—like a vehicle fire—can lead to serious emergencies.

✅ Be FireSmart:

• Clear dry brush and debris around your home
• Follow local fire bans
• Have an emergency grab-and-go kit ready
• Report smoke or fire to *5555 or 911

Let’s stay prepared and do our best to protect what we love. Central Okanagan strong. Fire Smart always.

August is National Wellness Month! At COHA, we understand that wellness isn’t just physical — it’s emotional, mental, and spiritual, especially when navigating illness, caregiving, or grief.

This month, we invite you to take a deep breath and honour your wellness journey — wherever you are on it. 💛

Here are a few gentle ways to care for yourself this August:

🌞 Start your day with intention – A few minutes of stillness, deep breathing, or quiet reflection can ground you.

🌿 Spend time in nature – Whether it's a short walk, sitting in a garden, or simply opening a window, reconnecting with nature calms the nervous system.

📖 Journal or express yourself creatively – Art, writing, and music can help release emotions and bring clarity.

👥 Reach out – Connect with someone you trust. You don’t have to carry everything alone.

💧 Hydrate and nourish – Small, kind choices for your body can have a big impact on how you feel.

🛏️ Rest without guilt – Your body and mind need time to recover and recharge.

✨ This month is a reminder that your wellbeing matters — every month, every day. Be kind to yourself. And reach out to us — we are here to help.

📌 Office Closed Monday, August 4 for BC Day

The COHA August Centre will be closed tomorrow, Monday, August 4, in recognition of BC Day.

This holiday is a time to come together and celebrate the rich diversity, natural beauty, and shared history of British Columbia. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on and honour the many First Nations whose traditional lands we live and work on—whose cultures, traditions, and stewardship continue to shape this province.

We’ll resume regular office hours on Tuesday, August 5.

Wishing you a safe, restorative, and meaningful long weekend!

On July 30, COHA hosted a small garden party at Hospice House—an afternoon filled with music, creativity, sunshine, and connection. Patients and families enjoyed a peaceful art activity, a picnic lunch, and ice cream sundaes, all surrounded by the beauty of the garden.

It was a lovely way to savour the moment and simply *be* together. 💛

🧡 Understanding Palliative Care: Myth vs. Fact 🧡

There are many misconceptions about palliative care—and one of the most common is that accepting it means giving up hope.

Myth #5: “Receiving palliative care means admitting defeat.”
Fact: Palliative care is not about giving up—it’s about improving quality of life.

It can be introduced at any stage of a serious illness and is designed to support not just the individual, but their loved ones too. Palliative care focuses on comfort, dignity, and helping people live well—on their terms.

Asking for support is not a sign of defeat. It’s a powerful step toward compassionate care. 💙
If you have questions about how COHA can support you or someone you love, we’re here to help.

Two Days on the Lake: A Joyful Break for Grieving Hearts

On July 23 & 24, some of the incredible children in our grief and bereavement programs experienced something truly special: two days of laughter, sunshine, and unforgettable adventures on Lake Okanagan.

From kayaking and tubing to sailing and swimming, our Two Days on the Lake program — now in its 4th year — gave kids the chance to just be kids again. These moments of joy and connection are powerful steps on the journey through grief.

We are so grateful to our friends at the Kelowna Yacht Club for making this experience possible. A heartfelt thank you to Sarah, Outdoor Services Manager, and staff members Jonny and Kaitlin, who brought incredible care and enthusiasm to the two-day event.

🌟 When you support COHA, you support programs that bring hope, healing, and happy memories to children and families facing profound loss.
