If the majority of your interactions with your child are just a series of course corrections, you’ve moved out of the role of an anchor and into the role of a supervisor.
We get so consumed with the weight of "raising them right" that we forget to actually like them. We treat every spilled milk, every loud noise, and every forgotten shoe like a performance review. We think our job is to sand down their edges until they are smooth, but in the process, we risk losing the person we are supposed to be building a life with.
Correction is a tool, but delight is the foundation. If they only feel your scrutiny and never your enjoyment, they will grow up believing they are a project to be managed rather than a person to be loved. They won't remember the "lessons" you lectured them on; they will remember the way your face lit up — or didn't — when they walked into the room.
Real leadership is found in the moments where you choose connection over critique. It’s the ability to see past the mess of the moment to the human being in front of you.
Rules without relationship lead to rebellion. But a child who knows they are a source of joy for their parent is a child who has a reason to hear what you have to say.
They will find critics everywhere. Be the one place where they are simply enjoyed. ❤️
