It's beginning to look like... the busiest time of the year! And if you've been staying up later than usual, getting shorter sleep than you regularly do, or maybe you're just finding it more challenging to sleep with everything going on, we hear you. 🙌
Luckily, many herbs can help with sleep and stress, and all can be easily found and incorporated into any daily routine! Please watch the reel and read below to know more! 🌿
🌱 Valerian // Valerian root contains valerenic acid, isovaleric acid, and various antioxidants that help with sleep and anxiety. In addition, Valerian can also help regulate nerve impulses in your brain and nervous system and can be an excellent support for those who are weaning off of their sleeping medication or are looking for a milder alternative. Finally, Valerian can also help with menopause and PMS!
🌱 Ashwagandha // Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb long valued for its potent effects on the body under stress. Ashwagandha is adaptogenic. It contains a compound called Triethylene glycol, an active sleep-inducing component of Ashwagandha leaves and could potentially be helpful for insomnia therapy. Ashwagandha can also help rejuvenate and strengthen the endocrine and immune system while enhancing the body's resilience to stress.
🌱 Chamomile // Chamomile may be one of the most popular herbs for sleep and stress and can be found worldwide at drugstores and grocery stores. Chamomile flower is full of nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and B vitamins. These nutrients provide nourishment to the nervous system and muscles helping to induce a sense of calm while relieving muscle spasms and tightness. Chamomile can also be used to calm upset stomachs and ease the digestive process, though it has been used most popularly to help with sleep and stress.
🌱 Passionflower // Passionflower has properties that help slow breathing. This allows for deeper respirations, which can help with lowering the pulse and decreasing the blood pressure -- all of which are common symptoms during panic attacks. In addition, while mainly known for its nervine and sedative properties, passionflower can also help with withdrawal symptoms from opioid and benzodiazepine addictions. Studies say this is because passionflower binds with the same receptor sites these drugs bind with, easing withdrawal symptoms, helping sleep, and soothing anxiety.
🌱 Lemonbalm // Lemonbalm is a citrus-scented, aromatic herb used to reduce stress and improve sleep since the Middle Ages. Evidence shows that lemon balm increases GABA levels, indicating that lemon balm can act as a sedative. In addition, it contains a broad class of chemicals called terpenes which are known to calm nerves and reduce anxiety.
We hope these herbs gave you the insight you needed to avoid stress and get as much high-quality sleep as you can. Whether you need a boost for your mood, energy, sleep, or immune system, there's an herb for that in TCM! 🍃
Chinese herbal medicine is perhaps the most commonly used segment of TCM since it can be applied to practically any health condition imaginable. For example, many women turn to TCM to treat PMS symptoms, menopause symptoms, and even fertility issues. After an individual assessment, herbs are prepared in various forms, including powders, tablets, pastes, and creams. 🎋
