May 1st marks , a time to honour the unwavering dedication and courage of all of our first responders who protect and serve our communities. As a municipality, we are deeply grateful to the teams of emergency responders in North Grenville and the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. Thank you to the North Grenville Fire Services for inviting me to introduce The F3 Method concept to many fire chiefs of the surrounding areas. I was honoured to be invited and that the NGFD have benefited from / trust this methodology.

FYI:
When the effects of stress and or experiencing traumatic events are not addressed:
- Nervous system (the Guard Dog) regulation becomes impaired
- Alienation from self, body, emotions and mental acuity
- Emotional regulation is hindered = increased intensity of emotions (ex; anger outbursts), irritability, insomnia, anxiety, depression, addiction, lack of intimacy and sexual disfunction, lack of sense of value and purpose
- Increased; blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol
- Immune system is compromised, stomach issues, aches and pains, joint issues
(just to name a few)

How the F3 Method Helps:
- Emotional regulation and Mental acuity is enhanced by; Movement, fascia work, mindfulness and breath control
- Fascial work is grounding and can calm the NS
- Movement pumps out endorphins (feel good neurotransmitters)
- Connects the mind to movement = decreases stress level
- STOPS the Default Mode Network from its regular reactionary patterns
-- DMN cannot be changed through narrative / visceral experience is required

The Kemptville / Municipality of North Grenville community is suffering unprecedented amounts of grief and stress right now, particularly within the teenager community. We have just lost a third grade 11 young man in a month. It is heart wrenching.

The amount of loss of life of beautiful teenage souls + school threats of violence in such a short period of time.... I have never seen it.

I know many teens don’t express themselves verbally to their parents when they are stressed, however humans use non-verbal communication more than verbal so note any shifts in your teenager's behaviour, energy level, physical pain / discomfort / distress, eating or sleep habits etc.

Stress can show itself through anger outbursts as well... especially in males. Maybe even taking it out while active in a sport.

Here are a couple ways to help:
- Breathing techniques are a powerful tool to move lodged distress through the body and to shift any intrusive thoughts. Great alternative when a teenager can’t figure out what ‘words’ to use to express themselves.
- Movement to activate all the body’s joints relieves tension and helps with sleep
- Twisting postures help to move hormones and lymph through the body (which gets stagnant or stuck and causes us to feel gross, tired, painful, lethargic etc.)
- Connecting breath to functional movement and stretching can alleviate mental and physical stress.
- Just taking a break from regular activities (schedules tend to get jammed up this time of year) to shut the noise off and quiet things down.

My brilliant friend Jennifer ( www.healthyroutes.ca ) supports teenagers dealing with mental and emotional stress. Her approach is extremely unique and extremely effective. She really understands what teens are going through and can support them with simple strategies. She even comes to you because she feels the best approach to supporting teens is to meet them where they are comfortable. Whether in your house or out for a walk etc.
She also runs a virtual mom support group every month on the third Thursday of the month @ 7:30pm.
