Most people think we're crazy when we suggest doing exercises with their dog 😅but one of my favourite things as a rehab therapist is working with dogs who've never tried doing anything remotely like exercise and watching their cute puppy joy!

But honestly, how do we get dogs to do exercises in rehab?

✨ Positive reinforcement
Treats, praise, toys, or whatever motivates them! Exercises should feel rewarding and fun, not forced

✨ Breaking movements into small steps
We don’t ask for big or difficult movements right away. Each exercise is introduced gradually and progressed only when the dog is comfortable

✨ Reading their body language
If a dog is stressed, tired, or uncomfortable, we adjust. Exercises are supposed to be fun!

✨ Short, successful sessions
A few quality reps are better than long sessions. We stop before frustration or fatigue sets in

I love helping owners to learn how to work with their dogs, exercises are just intentional movements. A bonus benefit, bonding with your pup! Owners often come to their next session saying that they were pretty sure their dog was asking to do more!

Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment used in animal rehab to help dogs heal, move, and feel better.

So what does it actually do?

✨ Reduces pain and inflammation
Laser therapy helps calm irritated tissues and can make movement more comfortable — especially for dogs with arthritis or soft tissue injuries

✨ Supports tissue healing
It increases blood flow and cellular activity, helping muscles, tendons, ligaments, and surgical sites heal more efficiently

✨ Improves mobility
When pain and stiffness decrease, dogs often move more freely and confidently

✨ Great for both acute & chronic conditions
From recent injuries to long-term joint disease, laser therapy can be part of most rehab plans

✨ Comfortable and stress-free
Most dogs relax during treatment — it’s painless, quick, and doesn’t require sedation!

🐕‍🦺 Common reasons we use laser therapy:
• Arthritis & joint pain
• Post-surgical recovery
• Muscle strains & ligament injuries
• Back pain
• Wound healing

Laser therapy works best when combined with exercise, manual therapy, and education — it’s a tool, not a standalone fix!

Capone is the sweetest and most handsome Rottweiler and we had the honour of treating him on his 10 th birthday 🎂

We met his loving owner at the Ottawa Pet Expo and she wanted to bring Capone to physio for prevention of age-related mobility problems. Capone showed signs of muscle atrophy and osteoarthritis. We showed his owner how to do some helpful hands-on therapy at home with him:

✨Gentle massage for tension relief and blood flow
✨Passive range of motion for joint mobility
✨Stretching of his muscles
✨Treats to the side for active flexibility

We look forward to see him again for some TLC!

Most people think dog rehab is only for post-surgery recovery — but that’s just one small piece of it.

Here are some of the most common reasons dogs come to animal rehab ⬇️

1️⃣ Injury or surgery recovery
ACL/CCL tears, IVDD, fractures, or soft tissue injuries all benefit from guided, progressive rehab
2️⃣ Limping, stiffness, or “slowing down”
If your dog is hesitant to jump, struggles on stairs, or seems stiff after rest, rehab can help improve comfort and mobility.
3️⃣ Arthritis or chronic pain
Rehab focuses on maintaining strength, joint motion, and quality of life — especially for senior dogs.
4️⃣ Performance or sport support
Active dogs (agility, dock diving, working dogs) use rehab to prevent injury and move more efficiently.
5️⃣ Weight-bearing or movement changes
Shifting weight off a limb, bunny hopping, dragging toes, or uneven muscle development are all signs something isn’t right.
6️⃣ Preventative care
Yes — rehab isn’t just reactive. It can help catch movement issues early before they become injuries.

✨ Rehab isn’t about “fixing” your dog — it’s about helping them move comfortably, safely, and confidently.

It's probably time I reintroduced myself

I'm Nicole, I've been a Physiotherapist for over 15 years and took my first animal rehab course in 2013. The cute four-legged pup next to me is Gracie, my (almost) 15 year old golden retriever and inspiration behind the name and why I love what I do.

I started Goldie's a little over 2 years ago and it's been the absolutely best experience. Animal rehab gives me the opportunity to help pets recover from injury or surgery, improve mobility and focus on ways to maximize animals quality of life.

Over the last 12 years I've learned that a dog's physical wellness isn't just about genetics or strength, but the quality of all the pieces of their life put together. Small things can make a big difference: learning to move in new ways, how to adapt your home to allow for healthy aging, understanding the importance of pet enrichment and the difference it can make when we act proactively.

Thanks for hanging out with us 🐶👩
