Every person has a story that deserves to be heard. Today we share Micheal's story 🧡
Ogimaawabiitong and Kenora Makwa Patrol are incredibly grateful to share these powerful first-hand stories from our community. A huge miigwetch to Micheal for sharing his story with us. There are always more stories to be shared!
Each participant was asked the same question: “Tell me a story?” 💬
Interviewer: What’s your name, my friend?
Micheal: My name is Micheal! I have lived in Kenora for most of my life. I used to drink back in the day but now I have quit all of that. I had a stroke, so that is why I quit. And now I live sober - I feel like it's pretty easy for me to do but a lot of people around me say “oh, I wish I could do that!”
Interviewer: Well, that is a really big achievement!
Micheal: I still have friends who still have... habits but it doesn’t bother me. But most of them know that I don’t drink anymore so they don’t offer me anything. Now I just go around chatting.
Interviewer: Do you have any life advice for someone else who might be trying to quit their habits?
Micheal: Ummmm... Well, when I quit, I felt it was pretty easy. I just kind of went cold turkey. But for others, sometimes it's hard to do because they have to go to AA and other programs. I can’t really change someone’s mind about how or when they change their life; they must want to. Throughout my life, I lost a lot of my friends.
Interviewer: Would you recommend a sober life?
Micheal: Oh ya, I definitely feel a lot better now. Like before, I could never dream. Whenever I blacked out, I would never dream, no dreams at all. Now that I am sober, I have dreams and some of them feel like reality.
Interviewer: That is really interesting; I have never heard of that perspective before. I couldn’t imagine not being able to dream.
Micheal: Oh ya, some of them are really vivid now.
I have lived in a lot of different places around town. Now I live with a landlord who used to be OPP. It took a little while to get used to him, to understand his standards of living. I have been living with him for about 6 months now. He is nice; he even took me to his camp. One of these days, he said he is going to take me out fishing!
