FLOOD UPDATE May 8, 2026 2:25 PM

It is estimated that approximately 25% of physical hospital space has been temporarily damaged and unusable, including a number of bed spaces. Lake of the Woods District Hospital was already experiencing the pressures of operating within an aging facility that has struggled to meet the demands of a growing community. This current situation has further intensified those capacity challenges. While a clearer understanding of restoration timelines is expected by the end of next week, it is evident that recovery will take longer than initially hoped.

We are grateful for the coordinated response and support from both the Provinces of Ontario and Manitoba. We also extend our sincere appreciation to our regional hospital partners, who have stepped up and continue to support us during this time. As we work closely with Emergency Measures teams, we are actively and urgently exploring additional options to help stabilize services.

As shared yesterday, with the Surgical Services Department (Operating Rooms) at LWDH currently unavailable, all scheduled surgeries for the next three weeks must be cancelled. Our teams are in the process of contacting more than 200 affected patients directly. If you had a procedure scheduled in May, please be assured that it has been cancelled and you will receive a call with further information.

At this time, there are no additional changes to other services. Patients should continue to attend their scheduled appointments unless they have been contacted directly by the specific department.

The next update that will be provided will come next week. Please continue to check back here for regular updates.

FLOOD UPDATE May 7, 2026 1:26 PM

(LWDH) continues to respond to the flood that occurred on May 6, 2026. The incident was caused by an infrastructure failure on the fourth-floor, resulting in water impacting several areas of the hospital. While the initial cause has been identified, assessment of affected spaces and equipment is ongoing, and restoration teams remain onsite to support recovery efforts. Thank you to On Side Restoration for their quick response.

Water can cause significant and rapid damage in a hospital environment due to the complexity of systems, equipment, and infection control requirements, particularly in an aging facility. This has contributed to the extent of service disruption being experienced.

Air quality testing is underway, with results expected mid-next week. These results will help guide long-term response plans. Current service impacts include:

• Surgical Services has been significantly impacted. All surgeries scheduled for the next three weeks are now being cancelled. Patients will be contacted directly by hospital staff.

• The Emergency Department remains open and fully operational. If you are experiencing an emergency, call 911 or come to the hospital.

• The Obstetrics (Maternity) Department remains open for low-risk deliveries only. Patients requiring higher-risk care should speak with their primary care provider to make appropriate arrangements.

• Other Services including Telehealth and Outpatient Psychiatry have been impacted and may operate at reduced capacity or in alternate locations. Affected patients affected will be contacted directly.

Our team is working closely with regional hospital partners, including sites in northwestern Ontario and Manitoba, to ensure patients continue to receive the care they need.

For patients with booked appointments, if you have not received a phone call, your appointment remains scheduled as planned. Please note that this may change, and we ask that you monitor your phone and voicemail closely. Calls from the hospital may appear as a private number.

Several services and workspaces have been relocated. As always, patients and visitors are asked to check in at Patient Registration upon arrival for direction to the appropriate location.

We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we navigate this difficult situation. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

At , patient and staff safety is always top priority. From time to time, you may hear emergency “codes” announced overhead. These codes are part of a standardized system used across healthcare facilities to help staff respond quickly and effectively to urgent situations.

For example: Code Orange is used to signal a major external event that may result in a sudden influx of patients. This could include incidents such as large accidents, natural disasters, or other emergencies in the community. When Code Orange is activated, our teams mobilize rapidly to ensure we have the people, space, and supplies needed to care for everyone who arrives. Our hospital also regularly practice Codes with Drills to keep our response plans sharp and ensure every department knows its role during an emergency.

Codes are designed for staff, but we know visitors and patients hear them too. If you hear a code called - stay calm, follow any instructions provided by the LWDH team and continue with your visit or appointment unless otherwise directed.
