We would like to sincerely thank both Mayor Andrew Poirier and Deputy Mayor Lindsay Koch from the City Of Kenora, who paid a special visit to our town hall yesterday as part of our celebrations.

In honour of May being Community Living Month across Ontario, Mayor Poirier and Deputy Mayor Koch awarded KACL with a Certificate of Recognition for our "exceptional dedication and impactful support to individuals in our community." Our Chief Executive Officer, Deb Everley, graciously accepted the award on behalf of all our hardworking staff.

We would like to offer a sincere thank you to Michael Jacques, the author of Can't Read, Can't Write, Here's My Book for paying us a special visit last week, to share about his story and help us celebrate .

Along with his father Marcel, we were able to have important conversations about community, connection, belonging and inclusion, all of which underscore the importance of May being Community Living Month across Ontario, as well as everything we aspire to here at KACL.

Hopefully we will see you two again soon!

It's officially Community Living Month across Ontario, and KACL would like to invite the entirety of Kenora to help us celebrate!

Each May, Community Living Ontario runs an awareness campaign to recognize the accomplishments of the Community Living movement, and in honour of that - and in addition to our Shine a Light campaign that's already underway - we are pleased to offer three special community invents for everyone to join us at.

On Wednesday, May 20th at the Community Arts Hub, starting at 5:30 p.m., we will be welcoming musician Alex Call - the man responsible for the hit song 867-5309 - for a special evening of concert, connection, conversation, and community. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

On Wednesday, May 27th at the Jarnel Contracting Pavilion, starting at 12 noon, we will be hosting a Community Living walk at the Harbourfront, all the way to Husky the Muskie and back. If you can make it out to show your support, please wear green and blue, the colours of Community Living Month! Everyone who is able to join us will also be treated to a free meal.

Last but not least, on Saturday, May 30th at the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre ball diamonds, we will be hosting the first ever Kenora's Field of Dreams event, which will be a once in a lifetime kind of ball game featuring the likes of Andrew Poirier, Eric Melillo, Abby Dent, and CFL Grey Cup Champion Mike Benson (and a whole bunch of other very special guests). For more information on this event, please check out the event page found elsewhere on our Facebook for more information.

We are so, so, SO excited to celebrate Community Living Month with the rest of Kenora, so please join us and help us make this May one for the ages!

Our WELL Committee paid a special visit to the Kenora Cat Shelter yesterday to hold one of our many “Learn It!” events, which we do once a month to help ourselves and the community at large learn more about new things.

We had a total of 18 people attend to learn more about what the Cat Shelter does, the services they offer, and their long history of making a real difference in the community. By the time it was all said and done, we even walked away with a few folks interested in adopting!

This year alone, the Cat Shelter has taken in 98 cats, bringing their grand total to 930 since July of 2023. Following a transfer of some cats to Southern Ontario, there are currently 54 cats in the Shelter and 27 more in foster care, and they are expecting their intakes to pick up as the summer approaches.

With this in mind, we were also pleased to offer the Shelter a small monetary donation, as well as some food and other supplies to help keep the kitties happy.

Thank you for having us, and we will be back!

We had such a wonderful time yesterday visiting with the Kenora Association for Community Living’s WELL Committee! 🐾

We hosted a special event for the KACL staff and individuals they support, where everyone had the chance to spend time with some of our cats, learn more about what we do at the shelter, and hear about volunteer opportunities in our shelter.

It was a meaningful afternoon filled with connection, curiosity, and lots of purrs 💛 We are incredibly grateful for their generosity as well - they donated much-needed supplies, along with a cash contribution to support the cats in our care.

Thank you to everyone who took part in making this visit so special. We loved sharing what we do and hope to see some new faces joining our volunteer team soon!
