Training Night: Evidence Preservation

Last night, TCGSAR members took part in a training session led by RCMP Sgt. S. Hebert, who presented on Evidence Preservation, an essential skill for any search and rescue responder.

While the public may think our primary role is finding missing persons, which it is, we can also be deployed to search for evidence. Anyone familiar with search tactics knows that first and foremost we are looking for clues. Understanding how to identify, protect, and document potential evidence is a critical part of that work.

Sgt. Hebert shared valuable insights drawn from real-world experience while covering topics such as:
• Protecting evidence from the elements
• Proper note-taking and documentation
• Maintaining confidentiality and secure perimeters
• Working with authorities during investigations

We also took time to recognize several members for their years of service and dedication to the team. RCMP Supt. B. Jolette joined us to present the awards and thank our volunteers for their ongoing commitment to public safety.

With over 50 members attending last night, our commitment to training continues to grow. Thanks to the generosity of Oulton College, we now have a new training space that provides an excellent environment for our members to learn and develop their skills.

Thank you to Sgt. Hebert, Oulton College, and all who continue to strengthen TCGSAR

🚙🧡 Farewell to Big Orange & Hello to Our New Ride!

Earlier this year, we got some sad news — our beloved bright orange 2002 logistics vehicle (yes, that one you’ve seen at our fundraising events) finally failed its safety inspection. After years of faithful service, Big Orange had reached the end of the road. Cue the tiny violin. 🎻

But just when we thought we’d be hauling gear in shopping carts, the family of a former VSAR member stepped up with an incredibly generous $4,000 donation from their estate to support a future project. We didn’t know it yet, but that project turned out to be the perfect send-off for Big Orange — and the perfect welcome for what came next.

Around the same time, RCMP in Nova Scotia heard about our situation and said, “Hey, we’ve got a vehicle that’s retiring too — want to give it a second life?” That kicked off a nine-month adventure full of paperwork, planning, maybe a couple of crossed fingers and more excitement than you’d expect from a logistics truck.

Thanks to the Nova Scotia RCMP’s donation and that $4,000 gift, we were able to cover the transport, repairs, and upgrades to bring our new-to-us logistics vehicle up to VSAR standards. It’s almost fully operational and ready for action — though we have to admit, it’s a bit less orange and a lot more quiet.

We owe a massive thank-you to Nova Scotia RCMP and the family of our former member for making this happen. Without them, we’d probably be trying to haul equipment in a hatchback.

And of course, big thanks to the folks who helped along the way:

Hon. Kody Blois and Office Staff - MP Kings/Hants

Mike Duheme - Commissioner of RCMP l

Hon.Gary Anandasangaree - Canada's Minister of Public Safety.

Your support turned what could’ve been a major headache into a happy ending — with better brakes, fewer oil leaks, and way more cupholders.

Congratulations to our friends at ACGSAR!

Today we picked up our BRAND SPANKING NEW Logistics trailer in OUR FAVOURITE COLOUR from Shay TIRECRAFT in Berwick. We've been saving and fundraising for what seems like ETERNITY!! Many thanks to our community for supporting our fundraisers, and that fab dance at the Kingston Legion back in August, for putting us over the top. Pictured here, our VP Jim P and Shay Tire's Jim W sealing the deal. We'll have it on the road sometime in the next few weeks, after our electrician and carpenter turn if from empty inside to something closer to TARDIS and NARNIA combined. Stay tuned, and thank you everyone!

Many thanks to B.M.H.S. For their donation of $1100 to Barrington Ground Search and Rescue. Donations came from proceeds of their red and grey day walk a thon that also raised money for their school lunch program. Thank you very much!

The number of people living with dementia globally is predicted to rise to 78 million globally by 2030 and 139 million by 2050. National Dementia Plans are the best tool governments can use to tackle this crisis, but they require sustainable support. Add your voice to the chorus of Canadians advocating for federal funding toward Canada’s national dementia strategy.

The only way forward is together. During this World Alzheimer’s Month, join us in raising awareness and calling on governments and communities to take action. Your voice can shape the national conversation.
