If every adult in Nova Scotia spent $21 a week at the farmers’ market for July and August, that would be a $131,794,320 investment into local farmers and producers.

The average adult in Canada spends about $336 on food a month (Everyone is different, but this is the best data we have from Canada’s Food Price Report. The average adult spends $4031.83 on food a year, which would be $336 a month.)

If there are about 784,490 adults in Nova Scotia, and we spent a quarter of that grocery budget at the market for July and August, that would be a $131,794,320 investment into local farmers and producers.

We know this is not possible for everyone due to barriers like food insecurity and accessibility, but for a lot of Nova Scotians, this is within reach.

MEASLES CASE CONFIRMED IN NOVA SCOTIA - Nova Scotia has reported its first case of measles in 2025. The case was found in the Halifax Regional Municipality and involves a person who travelled outside of Canada. The individual had received one dose of the measles vaccine. Two doses are generally needed for full protection. The last case of measles in the province was in 2023 and was also travel-related.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. There is no treatment for measles, but it can be prevented with vaccination. Initial symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Small white spots may appear inside the mouth and throat two to three days after symptoms begin. More serious cases can lead to pneumonia, swelling of the brain, and death. Measles has an incubation period of seven to 21 days after infection.

People born between 1970 and 1995 were offered one dose of the vaccine as children and should get a second dose now if they haven’t already. Those born in 1996 or later were offered two doses but should ensure they are fully vaccinated. Public Health also recommends that infants aged six to 11 months receive one dose before travelling outside Canada. People born in 1969 or earlier are usually considered immune but may consider one dose if travelling.
