👋Hey there I’m Bryce .therapist I share about motherhood and everyday mental health.
As a parent, a big part of having more patience with my children has been noticing what causes me to have less patience and going from there. One thing my husband and I have been talking about lately as we spend more time in our home together, has been our sensory sensitivities.
So often, when we think of sensory triggers, we look to our children, but we might have them too!
Last week when I took my kid’s for a drive to get out of the house I felt myself getting super irritated. They were sitting in the back being their usual 5 & 2 year old selves, but my stress level was on the rise. The car was a mess and full of beach stuff that didn’t get put away, the sun was bright and I had forgotten my sunglasses and there was this smell I couldn’t identify. And of course, in the midst of this what did I tell them, “please be quiet!”.
But it wasn’t really about them, it was everything else that was triggering my sensory sensitivities and lowering my patience for their normal, everyday behavior.
So the next time you feel your patience levels decreasing, tune into that feeling and get curious about what’s going on. It might just be a sensory sentitivity.
Do you notice any sensory related triggers in your parenting? Care to share?
