During any stressful event the nervous system becomes activated, and our body moves into a ‘flight/fight’ response. Among the many changes that occur are the release of stress hormones (such as adrenaline, cortisol), increased heart and breathing rates, and increased muscle tension.
Together with this very important mechanism which helps to protect us and escape from danger, our bodies also have an innate, built-in system to down-regulate an activated nervous system. This is where tremoring/shaking fits into the picture. It is the Emergency Exit door that enables our system to release the built-up muscle tension and return us to a state of calmness.
TRE® is a modality that engages this tremor mechanism in a controlled and regulated way, and it is useful to manage the stress and tension that we face on a daily basis in our everyday lives.
In Kimberley BC, I offer in-person, one-on-one and small group sessions.

Recently I was asked the following question: How does the body react when a trauma/stress is emotional rather than a physical threat/injury? My answer: the physiological response in the body is exactly the same for emotional and physical trauma. Our nervous system, stimulated by the HPA (hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal) axis moves into 'fight/flight' mode which generates a whole cascade of body reactions (see attached picture for some of these responses).
TRE helps to manage the effects of accumulated nervous stress in a fairly simple way. When you engage your innate body response (shaking/tremoring), this helps to release the muscular bracing (generated by the stress response), dump adrenalin and calm the nervous system.

From TRE Canada's website, FAQ:
How do people benefit from periodic TRE® practice, stress management and popular relaxation techniques?
Stress, anxiety and trauma are common events in people’s lives. We often experience stress on a daily level, either at home or at work. The body constantly responds to elevated levels of stress by contracting the muscles to ‘get through’ the problem. However, we seldom recognize these contractions until we experience pain, discomfort or illness. By practicing preventative techniques like TRE, we can prevent stress and tension levels from elevating to a point of chronic illness.
Based on descriptive studies and case reports, TRE® helps the body relax leading to better rest and relaxation. People who have tried TRE® report sleeping better, having better focus, reduction in racing thoughts and being less irritable.

The information below is quoted with permission from the TRE Canada website 'TRE Facts':
• The therapeutic muscle tremors evoked by the TRE exercise process is a natural, internal, neuro-physiological response of the body to reduce its own stress and restore a sense of well-being.
• TRE is a body based (somatic) process, when it is done with a Certified TRE Provider, the individual learns to discharge tension from their body in a safe and regulated way. It doesn’t require “revisiting the story”. (ie: verbally describing or talking about the traumatic experience)
• TRE can be taught as a simple self-help, tension reduction technique and it can be used as an effective complementary practice when integrated with other treatment modalities by those in the healing professions, including the treatment of PTSD and anxiety disorder recovery.
If you can't make the free session, TRE East Kootenays also offers individual and small group TRE sessions in the Kimberley/ Marysville area.
