With the return of spring, we look forward to warmer days, and the reminder of new life all around us.
Individuals in addiction recovery, at one of our Teen Challenge Canada centres, are reminded daily of God’s love for them and the promise of a new life found in Christ; as they work to overcome their life-controlling addictions.

As a community, we are all affected by addiction in one form or another. The Canadian Mental Health Association estimates that 21% of all Canadians will struggle with addiction during their lifetime. That amounts to 6 million people! National Addictions Awareness Week facilitates the opportunity to continue our conversations about the harms related to alcohol and drugs, and to talk openly about prevention, treatment, and recovery solutions.

We can’t stay silent. Lives are at stake and this week is designed to get us talking.

Did you know, in Canada, 600 people lose their lives to drug overdose every month?

To help give this perspective, consider that 20 years ago, the monthly average for death caused by drug overdose was 141. This means Canada has seen an increase of 400% in deaths due to drug overdose. This number is tragic and far too high!

So today, on International Overdose Awareness Day, Teen Challenge Canada reiterates our commitment to fight for the lives of men and women struggling with drug and alcohol addiction; providing help and hope to those who are looking for a better life, free from addiction.

We are honoured to stand in solidarity with and support the many Canadian families and friends who have lost loved ones to a drug overdose; and on this International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember those who we have tragically lost. They were cherished friends, sons, daughters, mothers, and fathers, who were taken too soon.
