Providing therapy to individuals who experienced trauma and abuse in their childhoods or later in life. These experiences can show up in our adult years as anxiety, depression, difficulty forming healthy relationships, feeling on guard all of the time, nightmares, avoiding things, and a general belief that you are not as good as anyone else.

We keep repeating our early patterns, these early adaptations or coping strategies because as children they helped us survive. So it can be very frightening to let go of or turn away from these coping strategies. But we need to do that in order to become free of them, in order to come back to ourselves. These same patterns, these coping strategies that work so well for us as children, now get in the way.

WE-CAN Client Profile: Tanya Beattie is the owner of Therapy with Tanya in Kingston, Ontario. She launched her business in September 2021 after discovering the value of therapy in overcoming her own traumatic childhood experiences.

“With therapy, I realized it was possible to feel connected to myself and to live my life fully,” she says. “Before entering therapy, I didn’t realize that anything could help me. I started thinking about how I might be able to share this gift with others who have also experienced childhood trauma.”

Tanya returned to school in 2019 and set out on a new path to begin her own private psychotherapy practice.

Today, she is living her dream of providing trauma-informed psychotherapy for individuals and couples. Her specialty is supporting individuals who have experienced childhood trauma.

“I know therapy can help people feel better, feel less scared, more at peace and able to enjoy their lives, rather than just surviving,” Tanya reflects. “The work I do is very much relational, building trust and a sense of safety. It gives me the opportunity to really connect with another human being.”

She adds, “I heard someone once say, ‘What are we here for if not for each other?’ and that really hit home for me. I love that I get to be here for others and feel privileged to hear their stories.”

Of her experience with the WE-CAN Project so far, Tanya says, “It’s amazing! I just learned about it and I can’t say enough about how much more organized and focused I feel.”

It is common to dismiss our pasts as irrelevant to our present day struggles, but if we think about it, how could that possibly be true?

As we learn more about taking care of our health we have come to realize that our health isn’t just our physical health but also our mental health. Just as taking care of our physical bodies is important, so is taking care of our mental health. This disconnect, that has been prevalent for centurie...

Sometimes it can be hard to talk about things that we struggle with because we don't want to sound ungrateful or like we are blaming our parents for our struggles.

I often hear "If I go to therapy and talk about the things that happened to me or things I didn’t get that I should have, I am going to feel guilty because I know my parents did their best, and I know they love me. They would never do anything to hurt me.”

The thing is our parents are human and as we know humans are not perfect, and sometimes their best didn't meet your needs and that doesn't mean they are or were bad people, they just didn't know better.

However, it is important to also note that while most parents genuinely try their best, there are those who deliberately hurt their own children. It is sad and horrible but sometimes that is something that needs to be acknowledged and worked through as well.

Traumatic experiences and relationships bring up all kinds of feelings in those that have experienced it. It can make you second guess yourself, your relationships, your actions and responses, among so many other things. Trauma Therapy is meant to help those individuals better understand why they ac...

The word trauma sure is getting used a lot these days, which is both good and bad. That's a topic for another day. For today let's look at some of the ways childhood trauma can impact us as adults.

Nine ways to identify if you may have experienced trauma during your childhood. Trauma can show up in all kinds of ways, yet at the same time it is often so similar that it is possible to recognize behaviours that are common amongst those who have experienced trauma. The actual traumatic events can....

What if we lived in a world beyond “diagnoses” and labels? Beyond suppressing symptoms? Beyond fixing behaviors?

Mental health issues are related to some of the biggest social issues that we face today. But our culture doesn’t understand that the root of many of these mental health issues, including addiction… is trauma.
