Planting By Moonlight: Creating a Moon Garden as a Sacred Practice
A Moon Garden is not simply a garden design to look beautiful at night - it is a space created to honour the quieter rhythms of life, the unseen cycles, and the sacred intelligence of darkness. While most gardens celebrate sunlight and colour, a Moon Garden invites us into a softer way of seeing - one that values reflection, stillness, intuition, and mystery.
For centuries humans have gathered by moonlight to pray, plant, sing, tell stories, and mark time. The moon governed tides, fertility, planning cycles, and spiritual observances long before electric light dimmed our relationship with the night sky. A Moon Garden restores that ancient intimacy.
Years ago, I had a cottage where I planted a gorgeous Moon Garden with a large variety of beautiful white flowers - planted so you could see the varying height of each one as you looked at the garden at night. And when there was no light in the sky, you could still clearly see the brilliance of the flowers.
Why Create a Moon Garden
Spiritually, the moon represents:
• intuition
• feminine wisdom
• cycles of becoming
• the unconscious
• emotional truth
• renewal and release
A moon garden becomes a sanctuary - a place to sit under the stars, breathe deeply, and reconnect with parts of yourself that only speak when the world grows quiet. It is a truly magical space to create for yourself!
It is especially nourishing for those who:
• crave peace and reflection
• feel drawn to lunar cycles
• meditate and journal
• enjoy evening rituals
• seek beauty in a unique creative way
Where to Place a Moon Garden
Choose a location that:
• easily receives the evening light
• feels private, sacred or sheltered
• invites stillness rather than activity
• allows seating or a path
What to Plant
Consider:
Moonflower
Evening primrose
White lilies
Jasmine
White roses
Lambs ear
Dusty miller
Silver sage
Hydrangea
Nicotiana
Phlox
Texture matters as much as colour - plants that glow, shimmer, or feel soft invite touch and presence.
Sacred Rituals for a Moon Garden
Planting ritual: plant during a New Moon while setting intentions for growth, healing, or clarity.
Full moon sitting: sit quietly, breathe, and let moonlight illuminate the garden - no agenda, just presence.
Moon water blessing: leave a bowl of water overnight, then water the garden with intention.
(take a peek at my earlier newsletters this month that outline sacred rituals for New Moon and Full Moon – these would be lovely in your Moon Garden)
Seasonal reflection: journal or meditate in the garden as the seasons shift, noticing what changes in both the plants and yourself.
A Moon Garden teaches patience. It reminds us that not all beauty seeks attention - some beauty waits to be noticed.
