π€ Mastitis vs Clogged Duct β Whatβs the difference?
They can feel similar, but knowing which one you're dealing with can change everything.
Letβs break it down π
πΈ Clogged (or Plugged) Duct
π§ A small, localized area of breast swelling
πΌ Milk gets backed up and has trouble draining
π Tender lump or knot that might soften after feeding
π₯ Warm to the touch but NO fever or body aches
What helps?
βοΈ Keep nursing or pumping as usual
βοΈ Gentle lymphatic massage BEFORE feeds
βοΈ Cold packs after feeds (10 mins max)
βοΈ Eat anti-inflammatory foods & boost choline intake
π« No more heat, vibration, or aggressive massage β it can make things worse!
πΈ Mastitis
π₯ Inflammation in most or all of the breast
π₯΅ Redness, heat, pain β plus chills, fever, body aches
π Milk supply might dip while your body fights inflammation
β οΈ Often caused by unresolved clogs, oversupply, poor fit flanges, or infection
What helps?
βοΈ All of the above for clogs, PLUS:
βοΈ Probiotics with L. fermentum or L. salivarius
βοΈ Ibuprofen (check dosage with your provider)
βοΈ Hourly icing (5-10 mins)
βοΈ Antibiotics may be needed (consult your doctor)
βοΈ Get a milk culture if no improvement in 48 hrs
π‘ Bonus: You do not need to pump and dump- your milk is safe!
