The Association of Ontario Midwives is calling on the Ministry of Health to implement recommendations made by an independent third-party Mediator to treat midwives comparably to other health professions--or risk losing them.

In her report, the Mediator, Beverly Mathers, recommended that midwives receive similar redress provided to physicians, nurses and other public sector workers to make up for the province's unconstitutional compensation restraint legislation and policies.

The report states that "... there is no mathematical equation that puts Ontario's midwives anywhere but further behind economically" because of the Ministry's compensation restraints.

Have you or someone you know been cared for by a midwife? We need your support.

Midwifery attrition levels are at an all time high, burn out rates are increasing every year. With almost as many leaving the profession last year as we had new graduates.

Now in March 2026, our current contract expires. The Ministry of Health and Ontario Midwives (Association of Ontario Midwives) have reached an impasse; unable to reach an agreement, so the AOM turned to the help of mediation, as midwives were denied binding arbitration. After receiving the independent mediators recommendations in January, the MOH has refused every single point.

So the report is going public and we are reaching out to all those who support midwives to aid us in our fight for keeping midwifery alive. Midwifery has an important place in our health care system, and losing it would be detrimental to the health of many growing families.
