Today, on International Day of the Midwife, we’re celebrating the people who work around the globe to support, empower, and care for families through every step of their pregnancy journeys. Midwives play an important role in delivering reproductive care, but many communities still find themselves short. About one million more midwives are needed to meet the world's current health care needs, there's still so much room to grow!

This makes us all the more excited to announce that one more midwife will be joining our team in the next couple of weeks, please join us in welcoming Josephine! With a passion for compassionate and evidence-based care, Josephine brings dedication, warmth, and years of expertise from her practice in Uganda to our clinic. We couldn’t be happier to have her with us!

Let’s talk about cannabis and breastfeeding.

THC, the active component in cannabis, passes into breastmilk and can remain in your body for days or longer. Because of this, there isn’t a known safe amount when breastfeeding.

The safest option is to avoid cannabis use while breastfeeding. At the same time, we know parents are navigating real life, real needs, and real decisions.

If you choose to use, reducing exposure matters. Use less and less often, avoid smoking around your baby, and make sure another sober adult is present when needed.

If you’re navigating this, you deserve information that is calm, clear, and judgment free.

The Association of Ontario Midwives is calling on the Ministry of Health to implement recommendations made by an independent third-party Mediator to treat midwives comparably to other health professions--or risk losing them.

In her report, the Mediator, Beverly Mathers, recommended that midwives receive similar redress provided to physicians, nurses and other public sector workers to make up for the province's unconstitutional compensation restraint legislation and policies.

The report states that "... there is no mathematical equation that puts Ontario's midwives anywhere but further behind economically" because of the Ministry's compensation restraints.
