When a grizzly bear attacked Colin in the remote B.C. backcountry, it wasn’t just paramedics who helped save his life.

It was you.

O-neg blood was on board of the air ambulance, and because of it, Colin made it to the hospital.

It all happened in the summertime. And with red blood cells lasting 42 days, the donor who helped Colin would’ve given in late June or sometime in July.

Whether you come in before a barbecue or after coming back from your beach trip… when the blood is yours, donating isn’t just about saving someone else. It’s about the quiet reward of knowing a part of you was there.

O-negative donors are always needed — and summer is no exception. If you're O-negative, your blood can be part of anyone’s story, anytime.

What do you get when you give? Sometimes, you get to make magic happen 🪄

When Eamonn’s mom walked into our Victoria, B.C. donor center to give blood for the first time, she had no idea her act of kindness would set something extraordinary in motion. Because that day the donor centre was full of players from the Victoria Grizzlies hockey team, making a group donation.

What followed was an unexpected connection. After hearing about Eamonn, an 11-year-old hockey fan with cancer, the team wanted to do something special. With help from donor center staff, they invited Eamonn and his family to a game - where he got to meet players, announce the starting lineup and felt the cheers of an entire community rallying behind him.

Giving doesn’t just save lives – it brings people together. And sometimes, it gives a little magic too. Experience what you get when you give.

Let’s talk iron! Every blood donation will use some of your iron stores. The good news? You can fuel your body with iron-rich foods that will restore your hemoglobin levels.

There are two kinds of iron that can be added to your diet.

🥩 Heme iron (from animal sources) is easily absorbed. Think beef, liver, chicken and turkey (especially dark meat), fish, seafood and eggs.

🥬 Non-heme iron (from plants) is still great – just make sure to pair with vitamin C for better absorption. Fill your plate with beans and legumes, tofu, nuts and seeds, whole grains, dark leafy vegetables, and even dried fruits like apricots and raisins.

Curious about supplements? Talk to your healthcare provider to see if that’s right for you.

Learn more about iron eligibility by visiting https://www.blood.ca/en/blood/am-i-eligible-donate-blood/abcs-eligibility/iron.

Our hearts are filled with PRIDE🌈 today, after spending the weekend celebrating and having great conversations at Toronto Pride. Thanks to everyone who visited our booth to talk to us about our ongoing 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion work. We’re deeply grateful to for inviting Canadian Blood Services to participate in 2025 Pride events and to all our 2SLGBTQIA+ employees, allies, and their partners, friends and family members who came out to march with us in the Toronto parade (for the first time ever)!

Having the opportunity to show up and show solidarity with 2SLGBTQIA+ communities is an important aspect of our continued efforts to build and strengthen trust and relationships – and we’re looking forward to attending more Pride events all summer long.

"Is O+ blood even important if it's so common?"

The short answer: absolutely. 39% of Canadians are O+ and they can help 85% of the population. Just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s not critical. Not sure of your blood type? No worries — we’ll find out for you when you come to donate!

You can learn more about your blood type by visiting https://www.blood.ca/en/blood/donating-blood/what-my-blood-type.
