Spoiler alert - your skin is influenced by your hormones whether you like it or not and guess what?! It’s not all bad!

Estrogen can get a bad rep but it does wonders for the elasticity of your skin! Hello youthful glow!

On the flip side, we can see dark patches appear on the skin called as our melanocytes multiply in response to an estrogen surge.

Has your skin suddenly gone dry? Is your hair falling out? Feeling more tired lately? Check in on your thyroid!

As with all hormones - it’s a dance 👯‍♀️ and balance is key!

Estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, cortisol, insulin, thyroid hormones all play a role at some level within the skin.

If you’re working to clear your skin for good make sure you’re considering your hormones and their role in your skins overall health and appearance.

First, I want to start out by staying that there are several topical treatments that I have seen work much more effectively for acne scarring than any cream you can use. Those details in another post! But for now - here we go with the top 10 topical ingredients that are known to support healing acne scarring.

1. Niacinamides
2. Retinoids
3. AHA
4. BHA
5. Mandelic Acid
6. Licorice Root
7. Green tea
8. Azelaic Acid
9. Vitamin C
10. SPF🌞

If you’re managing acne scarring have you tried any of these with success?
Can you guess my favourite topical treatment for acne scarring?! Comment below!

B E C O M I N G | Ooooo this is a hard one sometimes isn’t it? Have you experienced a time where you set a goal and achieved it and felt like “wow this doesn’t feel nearly as good as I had hoped” or conversely...have you ever accidentally fallen into something that was better than your previous self could ever have imagined?! When you’re steadfast in your path, what doors, what windows, are you missing? What areas of your life do you find it the hardest to “trust” the process in?

What does root cause REALLY mean when there are so many contributing puzzle pieces?
And, isn’t it really about more than that? It’s not just about identifying contributing factors so much as figuring out the cascade of events.

Thing of a stream that winds down a mountain, forming rapids that break over a cliff (waterfalls yay!) and ends in a slow moving creek that for some reason is now overflowing.

Your symptoms are the points where the water flow is disrupted - pushed right or left over boulders and rocks. Those boulders and rocks? - they are the issue in your gut, stress, hormonal issues etc.

Pharmaceuticals often just move the rocks downstream or place pieces of wood ahead or behind the rocks to allow for a smoother flow of water 💧 Or, the dig a bigger hole at the end of this cascade so it can accept more and more water overload 🤔... Sometimes that’s very, very necessary but they usually, in the case of chronic health conditions, require that you keep taking them, keep plugging holes and bridging gaps, and digging bigger holes in order to continue to minimize disturbance to your bodies flow (which in term reduces or resolves symptoms)

My approach looks upstream. Why is the water movement so aggressive in the first place? What has resulted in the water levels rising to begin with?

And, we start there. As far upstream as we have to travel.

You ready to put in the work. Sometimes it’s a hike but I like to think I’m fun to hang out with 😉 DM me to find out how we can work together!

R E B U I L D | Have you been told to cut out multiple foods groups if you expect to clear your skin?
Yup! Me too!

Before I starting into a deep dive into the research on acne and specifically on the gut skin connection, I had also been convinced that I needed to live off basically a FODMAP diet for life. If you don’t know what that is, look it up - NAWT fun!

And while I did end up discovering that I am sensitive to dairy, I can still consume dairy if I choose to - even daily - just not in huge portions - before my skin says ❌

And ultimately, I know that when my skin says no, it’s an extension of my gut and body at large saying “we’re inflamed down here” so for me, limiting dairy is something I chose to do. You’ll notice though that the reasoning is much more than skin deep.

Restrictive diets do a few things:
❌ limit a diversity of nutrients
❌ increase healing time
❌ decrease cell turnover
❌ typically slow transit time (less regular 💩)
❌ decrease production of key nutrients in the gut
❌ slow hormone detoxification
❌ impair the good gut bugs so they don’t produce your happy hormones as effectively

Etc...

The list is long but NONE of this is favourable for your acne journey! Please be sure to ask questions when food removal is suggested and if you do remove foods as a trial, ensure you focus your attention on what’s being added IN to your plan to increase nutrient density rather that focusing on what you can’t have.

TW: domestic violence
I sat there, eyes tearing up as she told me.
He had hit her for the first time the night before she came to the clinic.

I debated cancelling the appointment but then I remembered that you can’t call the cops or force me to leave him right? I’m not a kid. I can make my own stupid decisions.

Yea, that’s right, I said.

Okay well… I need out but I can’t leave yet.

Okay. Tell me more.

I can get away from him. That’s not the issue. It’s providing for myself and my kids on the other side of all this…It’s the money. I need to get a better job and I don’t think I can because of my issues.

I hear you. I’m treating your skin….are their other things going on health wise that are preventing you from leaving him?

No. It’s just that… People look at me and they see my skin and I feel like they are choosing not to hire me because I’m dirty. I won’t even apply to jobs when I look like a 14 year old with a face full of acne like this. Not to mention…how will I find someone else. I’m young, I’d prefer not to be alone the rest of my life. At least this as***le provides for us, I can handle his s**t. I don’t even think I’D hire me if I had the option to hire someone who looked a little more kept…I mean look at me - would you hire someone who’s face was oozing... I’m ugly, discusting,

…unlovable
…unworthy

….

The spiral had started and it didn’t stop until I interrupted. Her mind was spinning - I could almost see it. I needed to get her back into her body although I knew it would be a painful place to be at time like this. [continued in comments]

T A K E T H E P I C T U R E |

I remember a time where I’d catch someone trying to snap a picture of me making a memory and I’d quickly dip out of the shot.

I’d turn and dart.

They’d ask me to jump back in and I’d wave my hands frantically or in group settings I’d just act like I didn’t hear them.

When my acne was at its worst, I couldn’t stand that no amount of makeup could hide it.

In fact, in my eyes, makeup made it look worse. You can’t hide those kinda lumps and bumps I’d tell myself. My skin texture gave me away every time.

Makeup settled into my acne blemishes and was often rubbed off around the pores opening making the area around my zits look super white exposing what then looked like an extra angry zit.

It was a losing battle.

I missed out on the photos that capture so many memories.

I’m so glad I didn’t miss out on this one.

For me, it took clearing my skin to show up in the photos. I hope you can show up for yourself, your family and your friends well before I could. Your skin is only a small small part of who you are. But, if you feel your skin is holding you back, don’t let it go on any longer. Reach out and let’s work together!
