Congratulations to Jessica (Jes) Bolduc who has recently met all of the requirements of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario to transfer categories and become a Registered Psychotherapist. While I am sure many of you have seen the “Qualifying” status in your search for a therapist, who really knows what this means?
While a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) is a legitimate license status, dropping the “Q”, as they say, is a milestone in a therapists’ career. What this means is your therapist has completed at least 100 hours of clinical supervision, delivered minimum 450 hours of direct therapeutic contact, and passed a board certification exam.
Clinical supervision is provided by a qualified and experienced practitioner, essentially therapy for delivering therapy. Supervision provides a space for newer qualifying therapists to discuss and navigate ethical issues that arise during sessions, identify practice deficits and learning opportunities, and help to navigate different courses of treatment. It is an essential part of growing as a therapist.
Once transferred to the Registered Psychotherapist category, your therapist is still required to seek supervision for an additional 50 hours and complete another 550 hours of direct therapeutic contact before they can move to independent practice. At this point your therapist is free to practice completely independently, and hopefully one day, offer their expertise and experience to other new and emerging practitioners.
All of this to say that dropping the Q is the culmination of hard work, dedication, practice, and learning to deliver the highest quality therapy to clients.
