Ever wonder what actually happens during an osteopathic assessment?
Osteopaths look at the whole you — not just the sore spot. The goal is to find why your body isn’t moving or healing the way it should. Here’s how a first visit usually flows:
1. The conversation
* Health history deep-dive: We’ll chat about current symptoms, past injuries, surgeries, stress levels, sleep, work setup, and even digestion. Nothing’s “too small” — your ankle sprain from 2012 might be why your hip hurts now.
* Your goals: What do you want to get back to? Running, gardening without back pain, sleeping through the night?
2. The hands-on assessment
* Posture & movement scan: Standing, sitting, walking. We’re watching how your body distributes load.
* Range of motion testing: Gentle movements of your spine, shoulders, hips, etc. to see where motion is limited or compensated.
* Palpation: Skilled hands feel for tissue texture, temperature, and subtle restrictions in muscles, fascia, and joints. This isn’t a massage — it’s like your body’s giving us a status report.
* Special tests: If needed, quick orthopedic or neurological tests to rule things out and keep you safe.
3. The findings & plan
* Connect the dots: We explain what we found in plain language. Example: “Your right rib isn’t expanding well, which is making your mid-back and neck work overtime.”
* Treatment starts day one: An assessment isn’t just looking. You’ll usually get hands-on treatment the same visit to start restoring motion.
* Next steps: Home exercises, ergonomic tweaks, or follow-up plan tailored to you.
Osteopathy treats your body as one interconnected unit. Pain in your knee could be coming from your pelvis. Stiffness in your neck might link to breathing patterns. The assessment is detective work to find the cause, not just chase symptoms.
