INSTAGRAM LIVE WITH THE DOULA SUPPORT FOUNDATION! ✨

Tune in on May 5th at 8pm for an informative and interactive Instagram live with Chelsea Loutsenko, Birth and Postpartum Doula, from the Doula Support Foundation at YGK Artisan Market account.
The Doula Support Foundation (DSF) serves families in Kingston, and the surrounding areas during one of the most vulnerable moments in a person's life—childbirth, or, in some cases, pregnancy and infant loss.

As Doulas they are trained to provide support to pregnant people during pregnancy, throughout labour and birth, and in the immediate postpartum period. They provide evidence-based, non-judgmental care that allows birthing people to make informed decisions about their body, their labour and birth, and their baby.

"In these times of constantly changing policy it is especially important to begin your parenting journey with all the information you possibly can!"

Let's meet: Our Co-Chair and Director of HR, Chelsea Loutsenko!

What type of Birth Work do you do?
I am a Birth and Postpartum Doula

Who are you certified with?
I certified with the Lovely Bebo babes at BeboMia! I am certified as a Birth and Postpartum Doula.

What drew you to becoming a Doula?
I unfortunately didn’t know what a Doula was until AFTER I had already had both my kiddos. However, I got lucky by having a mom who is a nurse and had been practicing as a Doula (although she didn’t know the name either!) overseas. After my births I felt strong and powerful and that I had accomplished something amazing! When I started hearing the birth stories of my family members and my friends I realized that they didn’t feel the same way about their births as I did. Their births didn’t make them feel strong, it was something that they had to “survive” but not something they look back on with fondness. It broke my heart a little bit! It was around this time that I actually heard the word Doula and that it was an actual profession! The timing was perfect and I jumped in headfirst. I haven’t looked back since and just keep getting more and more excited about being a Doula!

Give three words that describe your Doula style:
Evidence, Encouragement and Knowledge

If you weren’t a Doula, what would your dream job be?
Tough one! I honestly feel like I’m in my dream job. BUT I would probably become a Midwife. :) I sense a theme…

What is...:
One thing that you’ve done that makes you feel proud?
I would have to say being at the groundlevel of the movement we are starting. It’s a lot of work but every once and awhile I stop and realize the amazing thing that we are working towards and how far we have come! (I am also insanely proud of my family. :) My kids are pretty amazing people)

Something about you that surprises people?
I grew up in a pretty different culture and attended a boarding school overseas. It also happened to be a Christian Missionary Boarding school, so those stories are always fun to share! ;)

Something that you are famous for?
Having every craft supply known to man in my basement. You wanna make something? I got stuff for that!! :)

One thing that is always in your fridge/pantry?
Stuff for Ceasars… I am always ready to whip one up- complete with celery salt rims and pickled bean juice!

Your favourite empowering quote?

What's your favourite...:
Colour?
Orange (although I don’t wear it… looks bad on me!)

Animal?
Hippo. ALL KINDS

Season?
Summer… absolutely summer. Maybe late summer when the bugs leave…

Thing about living in the Kingston area?
I love that my family can eat, sleep and play in the same city. Moving from the GTA (suburbs) with huge commutes this was a major draw of moving to Kingston!

Place in Kingston to buy a cup of tea/coffee?
If I’m feeling fancy I like Crave and Balzacs downtown. However! On my side of the city I actually really like the Starbucks on HWY 15. Always lovely people!

Birth Book?
I always tell my clients to read “The Birth Partner”. It has good tips and tricks and shares knowledge that is evidence based.

Non-Birth Book?
When I read for pleasure I read Fantasy and Sci-fi. My all time favorites include, “The Night’s Dawn Trilogy”, anything by Brandon Sanderson and “Game of thrones” (Although I am really REALLY hoping the books end better than the TV series (and that he finishes the books before he dies…) :) )

Go check it out!! DSF is excited to be there!

We are SO excited to announce that we will be at the 14th Annual Community Services Fair on May 8th! The fair will be located at the Frontenac Mall this year, from 11am-2pm.

This is the first time we will be joining in, so come out and say hi! We can't wait to see everyone!

This was one of the most intense births I have attended yet, but it was EPIC (Britta and Tyler ROCKED it!)! Weston is lucky to be born into a family already so full of love and support for each other!
Thank you for letting me be a part of it!
(Also.... Viara was also incredibly epic and I can't wait to work with her again!!)

Look what else I do!! :) Using sugar and cookies to make yourself memorable... Best idea ever! :) These beauties were given out to the lovely ladies at Community Midwives of Kingston, and the wonderful obstetric staff at KGH.
