Recently, Dr. Danielle Kain received recognition through University Hospitals Kingston Foundation's program and was joined by Sherri McCullough, Chair of Kingston Health Sciences Centre's Board of Directors to celebrate! 🎉

Dr. Kain is a true rock star, and not just because of her singing at the recent Banding Together with Old Docs New Tricks concert, but because of her depth of skill and knowledge. For those who do not know Dr. Kain, she is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Medicine, Department of Medicine at Queen's University Health Sciences, Co-Chair (Interim) of the Division of Palliative Medicine, and Clinical Director of Palliative Care at Providence Care and currently serves as the President of the Medical Staff Association at Kingston Health Sciences Centre.

A grateful patient made a gift in her honour through the program stating that "A mere 'thank you' seems woefully inadequate to describe the level of gratitude my family and I feel towards Dr Danielle Kain and her Palliative Care team. Danielle brings a level of compassion and empathy during the most difficult times of our lives."

When asked what this honour meant to her, Dr. Kain shared: "It is a really good feeling. It is incredibly humbling to know that someone who is in the midst of grieving the loss of a loved one can make the emotional space for generosity and gratitude alongside the grief - our patients and their families teach us so much about courage, and grace."

We’re proud to celebrate a remarkable act of generosity and legacy! 💙

In December 2022, Renée and Lawrence O’Farrell made a five-year, $350,000 pledge through University Hospitals Kingston Foundation to support at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC). In honour of this incredible gift, an x-ray room has been named in memory of Renée’s father, Dr. Salomon L. Fransman, for 25 years.

Dr. Fransman, a visionary and former head of KHSC’s Diagnostic Imaging Department, was instrumental in advancing imaging care in Canada—bringing the country’s first rapid CT Scanner to Kingston General Hospital and helping establish the Eastern Ontario School of X-Ray Technology. He was also the first radiologist in the world to use this pioneering CT technology in 1977.

Renovations to the dedicated room are now complete, and we were honoured to invite Renée and Larry to see the space and their recognition sign as we celebrate their lasting impact on healthcare in our region.

Thank you, Renée and Larry, for helping shape the future while honouring the past.

Shoutout to Dr. Ameer Farooq of Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) for receiving TWO recognitions recently! 🎉

For those who don't know Dr. Farooq, he is an Assistant Professor with Queen's University Health Sciences and a colorectal surgeon at KHSC. He is also the host of Cold Steel: A podcast for surgeons. 🩺

"It is such a privilege to be able to take care of patients. We don't do this work for the recognition but certainly it helps us to remember why we got into this profession - to help folks through really difficult times in their lives," shared Dr. Farooq. "It is not easy to be a surgeon. There are many highs, and many lows. This recognition goes a long way to helping us feel rejuvenated and connected to our purpose."

If you or a loved one receives exceptional care at KHSC or Providence Care and would like to thank a team member or entire department for their care, please consider thanking them through the program by making a gift in their name. Visit www.uhkf.ca/hyc to today. ♥️

"Gratitude is a fundamental aspect of what makes us human and if you can show it to someone who tried their best to care for you, it likely means the world to them."

In the heart of ’s music scene, few places held as much magic as Dollar Bill’s. Between the late 1970s and 1980s, the legendary bar on Ontario Street—now the site of Tir nan Òg—was the epicentre of blues and rock, hosting icons like John Lee Ho**er and David Wilcox. 🎵

Years after Dollar Bill’s closed founder Stephen Berofe found himself on a mission to bring its legacy back to life—not just for nostalgia, but for a cause close to his heart. He helped organize a successful fundraising concert in 2014, where rare recordings from the venue were released on CD and raised $30,000 for cancer programs at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) through University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF). 🏥

In 2018, Stephen was diagnosed with but thankfully was caught early and received treatment through KHSC. Grateful for the care he received, he dedicated himself to using the legacy of Dollar Bill’s to support cancer care through UHKF, ensuring that others could have access to life-saving treatments.

That’s how Dollar Bill’s Private Stock Premium Ale and Dollar Bill’s Private Stock Coffee were born. ☕ 🍺

Please join us in congratulating the Kidd 3 team at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) for their recent recognition!

An anonymous donor donated in the team's honour sharing: "The Care Team on Kidd 3 are beyond extraordinary. They cared not only for my Mom, but my family as well. Such warmth and compassion were humbling to witness. When my Mom passed, they grieved with us, and it was a pleasure to go back and thank them."

The program is a lovely way to say 'Thank You' to KHSC and Providence Care staff while giving back. Explore the program today at www.uhkf.ca/hyc

Kelly Hallett is a true organ donation advocate, and she continues to support Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) with any chance she has. 💚

Back in April, Kelly, as the CFL Fan of the Year, brought the Grey Cup to KHSC to celebrate the staff who cared for her and her husband, Keith, during their Kidney Paired Donation Program journey. 🏆

Afterwards, she brought the Grey Cup to The Merchant Tap House for a community fundraiser, supporting KHSC.

A few weeks ago, she joined the and University Hospitals Kingston Foundation at the Broom Factory to share her story and support a fundraiser for a new organ donation AI program at KHSC.

Throughout this time, she has been continually fundraising, with a goal of $25,000 for KHSC and she's not far off, as she's currently just shy of $22,000.

Let’s help her reach the end zone. 👉 Support Kelly’s fundraiser: https://bit.ly/42qhX1k

In 2019, Mike Laframboise directly benefited from the generosity of donors when he had surgery. Doctors used a da Vinci Surgical System (a robotic-assisted surgical machine that is less invasive and leads to quicker recovery times than traditional prostate surgeries) that was recently purchased thanks to support.

“I had my tonsils removed when I was 19 and that surgery was more painful than my prostate cancer surgery,” says Mike, the 77-year-old former president of the Kingston Dodge car dealership.

After directly benefiting from donor-funded equipment, Mike wanted to pay it forward and help the next generation of prostate cancer patients at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and across southeastern Ontario, so he created the golf tournament, now entering its fifth year! 🏌️

Proceeds from this year’s event will be used to maintain the da Vinci robot, secure a second system, and for other specific items used in the process of saving the lives of patients living with prostate cancer.
