Laughing his way through a 27-year career – hats off to Marty Elliott

If you’ve ever met Marty Elliott, you’ll know his positivity, fun nature and frequent jokes will likely make you laugh, leaving you with a smile that is bound to last the entire day. . Marty has been the team leader for the Attendant Care Outreach Program at Providence Care since 2001, assisting individuals with long-term physical disabilities in their own homes. After a solid 27-year career, Marty is switching gears and entering retirement.

“I learned early on in my career that a big part of success for me is that if a client or staff have a concern, even if you don’t have an answer yet or a good answer, a return phone call or in-person visit can stop a small situation from becoming something big. Clients have always appreciated knowing they’ve been heard and that they are worth something. There is nothing worse than sitting around and waiting. I have carried this philosophy with me throughout my career. It’s all about making sure they are heard,” explains Marty.

The Attendant Care Outreach Program assists clients seven days per week with personal care, activities of daily living and other activities outside of the home such as appointments and grocery shopping. First starting out as a Personal Support Worker in 1997 within the program, Marty transitioned to the team leader position after completing leadership and behavioural management courses. Over the years, Marty has interacted with and cared for hundreds of clients, allowing them the independence to live comfortably in their own homes.

When asked what has kept Marty with Providence Care for so long, his humour shines through.

“JoAnn [the program manager] won’t let me [leave]! I am not allowed” he jokes. “It’s been a great career. It’s been helping people every day. And there are certain core staff that have always been there and supportive.”

The first full week of May marks National Hospice Palliative Care Week in Canada. This is a time to recognize the incredible care that helps countless people and their loved ones.

Providence Care supports the continuum of palliative and hospice care through:

• The PCH palliative care unit on Heritage 2 provides specialized 24-hour palliative inpatient care for individuals who require higher levels of care or interventions than can be managed in home or hospice, including admissions for symptom management with discharge to palliative home care or hospice.

• Community hospice programs serve clients who are impacted by a progressive life-limiting illness at an advanced stage. Our programs and services, address symptom burden experienced by the dying and their care partners at end-of-life and extend through bereavement. The staff and volunteers are part of the palliative care team and focus on building meaningful connections to support the well-being of the people we serve.

• The construction of a hospice residence that will provide specialized 24-hour end-of-life care in a home-like setting for people in their last days to weeks of life and whose care needs can no longer be met at home or home is not their preferred place of death. The focus of care is exclusively to provide comfort and enhance quality of life, with no life-prolonging therapies.

Please join us in celebrating and thanking our palliative care staff, hospice staff and volunteers who offer compassionate care to those we serve every day.

We're raising the roof in celebration of the construction progress of Kingston's first hospice residence! 🙌

Roof truss installation began on the building this morning! 🏗️💜

Our hospice residence is really starting to take shape over at Providence Village!

Of course, this wouldn't have been possible without community support and donations made through University Hospitals Kingston Foundation!

When our hospice residence opens at the end of this year, it will provide 24-hour care and support services in a comfortable, home-like setting to people in their last days to weeks of life, their families and loved ones.

We're so happy to share this next stage of construction getting us one step closer to providing those in our community with more options for compassionate, quality care.

Today, on National Caregiver Day, we're sending a heartfelt salute to all caregivers, especially our cherished Designated Care Partners at Providence Care! 🙌

Jasper De Groot is a Designated Care Partner to his wife Lana and an important member of her care-team. Jasper and Lana are heading out today to have lunch with Lana's best friend - one of the many ways Jasper supports his beautiful wife!

In 2021, Providence Care introduced the Designated Care Partner program as part of the COVID-19 pandemic response and since then, has oriented more than 1,200 caregivers. Designated Care Partners are individuals deemed necessary to their care plan by patients, clients or residents and their clinical staff. They receive in-person training and education in infection control, fire safety and confidentiality. Designated Care Partners have 24-hour access and play an integral role in providing emotional and physical support to their loved-one every day.

From all of us at Providence Care, thank you to the caregivers just like Jasper . You are the unsung heroes, the compassionate souls who make a world of difference in the lives of those we serve. 💖 Your dedication, love, and unwavering support are vital to wellness and recovery, and we are eternally grateful. 💐

Today marks the beginning of !

Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year in Islamic culture and is celebrated by more than 1 billion people around the world!

Ramadan is celebrated as the month which the prophet Muhammad received the initial revelations of the Quran, a holy book for Muslims, from God.

During this month, Muslims observe fasting from dawn to sunset, engaging in increased spiritual devotion and acts of charity. It's a time of reflection, prayer, and strengthening one's connection to faith.

From all of us at Providence Care, we extend our warmest wishes to our Muslim community members observing Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak!

Journeying together: Supporting individuals and their families during end-of-life care

Registered Social Service Worker Kelly Bell has been the Community Care and Bereavement Coordinator with Providence Care’s Hospice program since January 2020. She coordinates care for clients with life-limiting illnesses, their families, and caregivers, along with those affected by grief and loss. The focus of care is exclusively on providing comfort and enhancing quality of life, with no life-prolonging therapies.

“It is an honour to be a part of and bear witness to clients’ end-of-life journeys. I really love my job. Just connecting with so many people, different people. It could be staff, volunteers, family members or a caregiver. Everyone deals with and processes death and grief differently. It is a privilege that so many people let me in and accept my support during a time when their whole world is falling apart,” explains Kelly.

In Kelly’s day-to-day responsibilities, she reviews incoming referrals, determines eligibility and completes an assessment. From there, Kelly matches clients and their care partners with trained volunteers who provide emotional, social and spiritual support in group settings and through one-to-one visits virtually and in home settings.

“Often, we support the caregiver – because the clients’ needs can sometimes be met through home care or privately hired personal support workers. People always rush to help – but in the moment the caregiver often doesn’t get a lot of support.”

Kelly also spends time with clients and their care partners at the bedside during their final hours. “It can be the most spiritual experience. In fact, I have never found another moment that is quite the same. It’s the little things that feed me. It’s the closest that I can get, I think, to figuring out what life is supposed to be about. I get to be present at a very vulnerable time of life.”
