First and foremost... 'The practice of massage therapy is the assessment of the soft tissue and joints of the body and the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissue and joints by manipulation to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function, or relieve pain. Alana Hamelin is the founder, owner and practicing Registered Massage Therapist of 'Better Balance Massage Therapy'. Alana is a graduate of the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy, which is the founding college of Massage Therapy in Canada. She has been practicing full-time, in a clinical setting, since January 2007 - present. She specializes in Deep-Tissue Massage and has extensive experience in treating Sports Related & Repetitive-Strain Injuries, Motor Vehicle Accident Injuries, Chronic Pain, Prenatal Massage and more. Recently, she is also proud to be teaching and supervising the Massage Therapy students at Trillium College! Her other work involves Sporting events, such as Barclay's Churchill Cup 2008, where she was responsible for pre-game Massage Therapy for the Irish and Scottish teams. And along with KOPI, she was the sole Massage Therapist, providing on-site Massage Therapy at Kingston's Feb Fest in 2009. Welcome to our B*W Yoga fam, Lauren Rudick!!! 🥳💚

Lauren brings so much experience, warmth, and genuine care to everything she offers, and I’m truly grateful she’s joining our team.

Alongside teaching, Lauren runs a yoga academy, mentoring and supporting teachers in their growth, and hosts an amazing podcast that I’ve been fully binge-listening to lately 🙋‍♀️🎧 — thoughtful, real, and incredibly inspiring.

Lauren is Canadian 🇨🇦, originally from Montreal, and while she’s been planting some roots here in Kingston (which she loves!), she brings a truly global perspective, having hosted retreats in more than 55 countries around the world 🌍✨

She’ll be with us until September, so please join me in giving her a big Better Balance Wellness welcome! 🤗

✨ Lauren will be teaching Thursday evenings, 6:30–7:30 PM, taking over my regular class while she’s here.

❄️✨ In the middle of a Canadian winter, having something beautiful to look forward to can be incredibly uplifting. ✨🌴

I wanted to share this lovely yoga retreat in Sayulita, Mexico, hosted by my friend and colleague Lauren Rudick.

There’s something powerful about putting a warm, nourishing experience on the calendar—sunshine, movement, community, rest—especially when the days feel long and cold. Even thinking about it can lift the spirit.

And if this isn’t the right season for you to travel, but you know a friend who could really use some cheering up, a reset, or something meaningful to look forward to—this is one I genuinely and highly recommend!

A little about Lauren… 💫
Named “All Star” and accompanied by a full page spread by Women’s Health Magazine and a “Bravery driven badass” by Notable, Lauren Rudick is an outspoken but exuberant light in the world. She has traveled alone to over 50 countries, teaching yoga across 4-continents and sharing her journey through photos and pros along the way. Lauren is an internationally celebrated yoga teacher, photographer and story teller originally from Montreal, Canada. In 2016, she founded Yoga Academy International, a school that has quickly grown to become one of the most widely recognized yoga schools worldwide, known for incredible trainings abroad and the highest standard of education in yoga.

Better Balance embodies wisdom through discernment and lived experience - keep practicing and keep showing up!

Hit on all of the things that are working for you. Re-read that book, re-take that online or in-person course or class, re-listen to that podcast or audiobook. We can ask ourselves - What did I take away last time? What did I implement? What else did I learn? What resonated differently? What is one small thing I can do with these insights today?!

Marcus Aurelius read Epictetus so many times, it became a part of him. Chrysippus loved the play Medea so much and quoted from it so often that he joked one of his essays was the “Medea of Chrysippus.”

And of course, it’s not just philosophers who do this. Musicians fall in love with songs from other artists, listening to them, playing them over and over again until they are remade in their own image. Johnny Cash did this with “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails. Luke Combs did this more recently with Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car.” The musician Phoebe Bridgers sings about this on her song “Chinese Satellite,” and in fact, she actually did it on her album Stranger in the Alps with a cover of Mark Kozelek and Jimmy LaValle’s “You Missed My Heart.” As she explained in an interview,

“I have this thing where I have to listen to songs over and over if I like them a lot and I have to listen to that song over and over but then I was like, I have to play this. It's an extra level, I have to get inside it. That song totally resonated with me, I couldn't stop listening to it.”
That's what we need to do with the Stoics. Not just read them, we have to get inside them.

Marcus wrote about how the philosopher is one with their weapon—like a boxer, more than a swordsman. A boxer just clenches their fist. A fencer has to pick something up. Through repetition, through absorption, we're trying to fuse ourselves with our philosophy. To make it instant, instinctive, inseparable from who we are.

This is why Seneca urged us to "linger among a limited number of master-thinkers, and digest their works." Not skim. Not sample. Digest. Until the wisdom takes firm hold inside you, never to be dislodged.

The Stoics are not something you have read. They are something you are reading. Always. At every age, every era of your life. The world is constantly changing. We are constantly changing. Therefore what we get out of these books changes, too.
