🌟 As a speech therapist, I often encounter misconceptions about how an articulation (pronunciation of speech) assessment works. Many parents expect an intrusive examination of the mouth and throat to figure out what's going wrong. 🧐

In reality, the process is much simpler and less invasive! I show the child simple pictures designed to cue them to say words and sentences that contain all the sounds used in English. 🎨🗣️ By listening to how they pronounce these words, I gather the vast majority of the information I need. 👂✨

In some rare cases, a brief, non-intrusive anatomical examination might be required to check things like tongue range of motion or lip shape imitation. But it's almost entirely about listening! 🎧❤️

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Parent Tip Tuesday! 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Helping your child with speech sounds at home can make a big difference for consistent progress! Here are my top three general tips for functional practice at home:

1. Use a mirror to help your child see how their mouth moves.
2. Break sounds down into smaller parts -- for example, a 'ch' sound can be approximated with a 't' sound smushed together with a 'sh' sound. Ask your speech therapist for sound-specific tips!
3. Make practice a part of your daily routine -- the hardest thing for building routines is to add something new to your day. You're a busy person! Build practice into existing routines instead of adding a whole new step to your day.
