As a Black-owned and women-led spa rooted in natural care and community connection, Cher-Mère is proud to stand in recognition of Emancipation Day. Our presence in Kingston is part of the ongoing legacy of Black entrepreneurship, resilience, and wellness—a legacy that continues to grow from the strength of those who came before us. Emancipation Day is not only a time to reflect on the past, but also to celebrate the progress and power of Black-owned businesses, voices, and spaces. We are honoured to serve our community and remain committed to creating spaces of healing, beauty, and belonging.
We invite you to visit 68th Brock Street and take a moment to view the stunning portrait of Judith Brown, a community elder and activist, created by acclaimed artist Sandra Brewster as part of her Blur 6 series. This powerful image was made possible by the Agnes Etherington Art Centre and honours Judith’s enduring impact on Kingston and Black communities across Canada.
The City of Kingston will host a flag-raising ceremony at Confederation Park on Friday, August 1 at 11:30 a.m. Following the ceremony, a Community Services Fair will take place from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m., showcasing local organizations and services that support Black and equity-deserving communities. In the evening, City Hall will be lit in red, gold, and green, symbolizing Pan-African pride and unity.
As part of the extended celebration, we’re excited to share a vibrant community event — the Free Community Black Block Party — happening on Sunday, August 3 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Pedalworks Café in Kingston. This event will bring together music, culture, food, and community in a joyful and meaningful celebration of Black freedom and culture.
