Queen's Partnership on Neurodevelopment We are group of researchers and clinicians working to better understand neurodevelopmental disorders What is Q-POND? What does Q-POND do?

A group of researchers and clinicians at Queen’s University (Kingston, ON) working in collaboration with many other researchers and clinicians at various research institutions across Canada. Recruits research participants both with and without Neurodevelopmental Disorders (such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Intellectual Disability, OCD, Tourette Syndrome and some related genetic syndromes suc

h as Down Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome, and Rett Syndrome). This research group has been actively recruiting for various studies for Autism Spectrum Disorder since 2001 (www.AutismResearch.com ) but now has the opportunity to expand their studies to these additional disorders. Here is a talk my research team (POND) is hosting. This month's focus is on parental stress management. Led by psychologist, senior scientist at The Hospital for Sick Children, and POND executive member Dr. Jennifer Crosbie, this session promises to be both informative and engaging. Dr. Crosbie will guide a conversation on parental stress management, offering invaluable strategies. Through interactive dialogue, attendees will have the opportunity to explore successful approaches that have worked for families experiencing high parental stress.

Presented by the Child and Adolescent Development Group at Queen’s University, this free, six-part series will introduce the wonders of child development, from infancy to the teen years.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will work within the team-based structure of the Queen’s Partnership on Neurodevelopment (Q-POND)/Queen’s Genomics Laboratory at Ongwanada (Q-GLO) within the Department of Psychiatry and will play a critical role in ongoing research projects. The Research Assistant’s primary responsibilities will be related to studies and clinical trials conducted for the Province of Ontario Neurodevelopmental Disorders (POND) Network involving participant assessments; parent interviews; recruiting and enrolling research participants; assisting with study related experiments and tasks; specimen collection and handling; working closely with the Study Coordinators to ensure that study protocols and procedures are followed and ensuring compliance with regulatory and ethical guidelines. The POND Network focuses on the study of neurodevelopmental disorders in children and youth with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Intellectual Disability (ID).

Autism Clinical Trial in Kingston, Ontario
We are currently studying a drug called Arbaclofen to improve social functioning in children and teens with Autism.

Study Title: A randomized placebo-controlled trial of Arbaclofen vs. placebo in the treatment of children and adolescents with ASD.
Study Description: We are investigating a study drug called Arbaclofen against placebo for improving social & global functioning and communication in children and teens with autism.
We are looking for: children between 5 and 17 years old diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), can verbally communicate, and tolerates (no major worries) blood work.
Study Duration: It is an 18-weeks-long trial with approx. 9 study visits in Kingston, ON
Tasks: Social & cognitive assessments, blood work, EEG, questionnaires, parent interviews.
Risks: May include sedation (tiredness) & upset stomach.
Benefits: Arbaclofen may help improve social functioning; The information we collect from this study is to help us understand ASD better and how to treat it. You may or may not benefit directly from participating in this study, depending on whether this drug is found to work. This study may help other children and adolescents with ASD in the future if the researchers find a new treatment option.
*Once study completed, optional open-label phase for participants to receive the study drug.
