What is a celebrant? A celebrant is like an emcee. They first get to know the person, then craft the service, then deliver it. They often become a friend.

Sometimes, we don't know anyone who would lead the funeral or Celebration of Life. A spiritual leader, or a charismatic brother-in-law? If you don't know a clergy person or a family member who can act as an emcee, we offer you a Celebrant.

Our Celebrant, Chris Walker, is trained to craft meaningful services for people who may not want religion present.

During the nicer weather, James Reid's offers a bereavement walking group in the spring and the fall. Our walking group invites all bereaved individuals who have experienced the death of someone significant. We enjoy the refuge of Nature and the understanding of others. If you are grieving and would like to make connections with nature and people, this walk is for you.

NEW for 2026 - The group will meet Tuesday MORNINGS at 10:00 am to 11:30 am, including picnic refreshments provided afterwards. We meet at the Lake Ontario Park parking lot benches, just before the splash pad. Cancellation due to bad weather. If unsure, call James Reid’s, (613) 544-3411. There is no charge for this group.

The Spring 2026 Walking Through Grief group begins Tuesday, May 19th at 10:00 am and runs for four weeks through to June 9, 2026

What is a memorial planting kit?

It's a way to turn cremated remains into healthy soil — so you can plant a tree, create a garden, or scatter in nature in a way that nourishes plants and the environment.

Here's why it matters: cremated remains have extremely high pH, sodium, and nutrient levels that harm plants. Without adjustment, studies show over 50% of plants won't survive scattering with ashes.

Ashes to Earth™️ memorial planting kits solve this. A patented blended soil formula transforms remains into balanced, living soil that supports long-term growth.

Families use them for:

🌳 Memorial trees (backyard, cottage, family property)

🌸 Memorial gardens (flowers, herbs, a quiet space)

🌲 Scattering in meaningful places (parks, trails, cherished landscapes)

We're now offering these kits as a nature-based option for families choosing cremation.

Have questions? We're here to walk you through how it works — gently, and at your own pace.

This Mother’s Day, we take a moment to honour and remember the mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures who have shaped our lives with love, strength, and care.

For those celebrating, we hope your day is filled with warmth and gratitude. For those remembering a mother who is no longer with them, we hold space for you and your memories today.

A mother’s love is never forgotten—it lives on in the stories we share, the traditions we carry, and the hearts she helped shape.

From all of us at James Reid Funeral Home, we wish you a peaceful and meaningful Mother’s Day. 🤍

Today, we recognize the National Day of Mourning.

We pause to reflect on the importance of safety, compassion, and care for one another, both in the workplace and beyond. Every life is valuable, and every loss leaves a lasting impact on families, friends, and communities.

At James Reid Funeral Home, we stand in remembrance with those affected and hold space for reflection and healing.
