Did You Know? Early Eye Exams Are Key to Your Child's Success!

As parents, we want the best for our kids, and that includes ensuring their eyes are healthy! Did you know that many vision problems in children can go undetected, impacting their learning and development?

Why are eye exams important for kids?

✅ Early Detection: Vision problems like nearsightedness or lazy eye can go unnoticed until they affect school performance. Early exams help catch these issues before they become problems!

✅ Boost Learning: Good vision is crucial for reading, focusing in class, and playing sports. Regular eye exams help keep your child on track for success.

✅ Eye Health for Life: Catching potential eye issues early means better long-term health and less risk of permanent vision problems.

When Should You Take Your Child for Their First Eye Exam?

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that children have their first eye exam between 6-9 months of age, then again between 2 to 5 years, and annually after that.

ARE YOUR CHILD'S EYES READY FOR SCHOOL? The only way to truly know how well your child can see is through a thorough eye exam.

Only 10% of Ontario children under the age of 4 and 14% under 6 received a comprehensive eye exam from an optometrist in 2013. Research shows that undiagnosed vision problems often undermine a young person’s chance of success at school, and only comprehensive eye exams can detect childhood eye diseases and visual problems that can be corrected while the child is young.

The Ontario Association of Optometrists has published a report that called for changes to the way eye care is approached in the province. The heart of the problem, according to association member Dr. Joshua Smith, is that Canadians don’t realize…
