THE THING ABOUT PAIN...
Pain is serious. And relieving it is big business. Those who suffer from pain spend billions seeking its relief. In fact, pain is often what prompts people to visit our practice.
It turns out there are some very important reasons why we’re equipped to sense pain.
Dorland’s Medical Dictionary lists over 34 different types! Naturally, if you’re experiencing pain, you want it to go away. And while you can expect our compassion, we’re interested in correcting the underlying cause of your pain.
A LIMIT HAS BEEN REACHED...
Pain is a way our body tells us we’ve reached a boundary. When our finger exceeds the limits of the joint function for which it was designed for, we experience pain. This warning protects us so we can avoid a more serious injury. It’s a good thing. And while a life without pain may sound good, it’s essential for our health and well-being.
PROVIDING A WARNING...
Pain is a signal our body uses to alert us that something needs our attention. Physical pain, social pain and even psychological pain are warnings that something must change. Pain is a way the wisdom of your body communicates with its owner: you. Headaches. Spasms. Tingling. Aches and pains alert you that something is amiss and needs correction.
First, your body will gently whisper to warn you. Unheeded, it speaks with greater urgency. If ignored, it may escalate into full-fledged shouting!
FOOLING YOUR BODY...
Pain prompts many to take a pill to reduce it or suppress it.
However, numbing your body with a pain reliever doesn’t make the problem go away. It’s still there. The drug merely fools your body so you can’t feel the warning. With time, the dosage must be increased to quiet your body’s outcry.
Using a drug to fool your body’s warning system may be convenient, but dangerous.
A thorough examination can help determine if the pain is due to aberrant spinal structures. The moving bones of the spine are often implicated in neck and back pain. Our strategy is to address the underlining spinal problem with gentle and natural Chiropractic adjustments. As spinal joints move better and nervous system function improves, the self-healing capacity of your body is revived.

THE THING ABOUT PAIN...

Pain is serious. And relieving it is big business. Those who suffer from pain spend billions seeking its relief. In fact, pain is often what prompts people to visit our practice.

It turns out there are some very important reasons why we’re equipped to sense pain.

Dorland’s Medical Dictionary used by health professionals around the world, list over 34 different types!

But pain is rarely the problem.

Besides possible addiction, it can lead to far more serious problems. As your body tries to eliminate the medicine it sees as a foreign substance, kidney and liver damage may result. Even stomach bleeding.

Using a drug to fool your body’s warning system may be convenient, but dangerous.

A thorough examination can help determine if the pain is due to aberrant spinal structures. The moving bones of the spine are often implicated in neck and back pain.

Our strategy is to address the underlying spinal problem with gentle and natural Chiropractic adjustments.

As spinal joints move better and nervous system function improves, the self-healing capacity of your body is revived.

Symptoms subside. Naturally.

“There’s Something I Forgot To Tell You...”

After a week or two of care a new patient will often pull us aside.

They go on to describe some aspect of their health that has improved. Only thing, it’s not what prompted them to originally see us for care.

This happens surprisingly often.

They didn’t mention their acid reflux, indigestion or some other condition during our initial visit. That’s understandable. Many people think of Chiropractic as something that only helps spinal conditions.

Those who see Chiropractic as only a treatment for headaches and back pain overlook something more significant. Namely the role that Chiropractic may play in whole body health.

Here’s how...

1. Your nervous system controls and regulates every cell, tissue and organ.

2. The nervous system consists of your brain, spinal cord and all your nerves.

3. The most important parts of your nervous system are protected by bone.

4. The moving segments of your spinal column are vulnerable to misalignments (subluxations).

5. Aberrant spinal biomechanics can affect nervous communications.

6. Impaired nerve messages can produce problems peripheral to the spine.

7. As nervous system interferences are reduced, symptoms often resolve.

Which raises an important question.

When is a stomach problem a stomach problem? And when is a stomach problem actually a nerve communication problem between the brain and stomach?

It’s the brain that controls your stomach. Just as it controls your lungs, your knees and every other function of your body. It controls and regulates every bodily function via nerve messages sent over the spinal cord.

Interferences from moving bones protecting these nerves could show up as a stomach problem...but the real problem is along the spinal column. Correct the spinal problem and the stomach problem often resolves.

Does that make Chiropractic a treatment for stomach problems? Of course not. The intent of Chiropractic Care is to restore proper function to a compromised nervous system. Instead of “side effects” the happy result is “positive effects” that many patients notice as their care progresses.

NFL & Chiropractic Care 🏈

The National Football League is a tough place to make a living. Many athletes last less than 4 years as a professional and the competition is fierce. Everyone is looking for an advantage to perform at the highest level.

What do you think some of these advantages are...

Healthy eating? A top notch trainer?

What if I told you chiropractic care has been essential part of the “secret sauce” that many future NFL Hall of Famers are using to get a competitive advantage!

As a matter of fact, this is not a very big secret. Every NFL team has a chiropractor on staff and periodicals such as USA Today, have written pieces regarding the relationship between chiropractic care and the NFL.

The truth is that these athletes are using chiropractic care for rehabilitation from injuries, possible prevention of future injuries, as well as for achieving top performances.

The chiropractic adjustment has been shown to directly interact with the central nervous system. It can reduce pain, decrease muscle spasms, reduce intra-discal pressure, amongst a host of other positive effects.

The best thing about chiropractic care is that you don’t need to be a professional athlete to experience it’s powerful benefits.

Whether you are a pro athlete looking for a top performance or a weekend warrior looking to stay active, we can help.

SNOW SHOVELLING SAFETY TIPS

Here are 7 tips to shovelling snow properly...

1. Give yourself plenty of time to shovel - don't rush yourself.

2. Use a couple layers of clothes to keep your muscles warm and flexible.

3. Do warm-up stretching of the arms, shoulders, legs and back beforehand.

4. When you shovel, push the snow straight ahead and walk it to the snowbank. Don't throw it.

5. Avoid sudden twisting and turning motions.

6. When you need to lift the snow, bend your knees. Let muscles of your legs, buttocks and arms do most of the work, not your back.

7. Take regular rest breaks to alleviate the strain off your muscles.

Enjoy the wintery outdoors, even if it involves a little muscle ☃️😊

THE LAST DIET YOU’LL EVER NEED

It’s that time of the year again, when we make resolutions to lose some weight and embrace healthier habits. That usually involves some type of “diet.”

Every year it seems there are more choices… Paleo. Ketogenic. Mediterranean. Weight Watchers. The list goes on.

Which one is best?

It’s a question we get all the time from those who have either begun a slimming program or are considering one. They’re looking for confirmation as to which diet is easy and effective.

Virtually every diet has a serious flaw. It’s the diet part.

Name the diet and if someone follows it, they’ll likely lose some weight. When they reach their goal, they congratulate themselves and return to their original eating and exercise habits.

These are the eating and exercise habits that created the need for a diet in the first place!

Not surprisingly they’re back to where they began, but now discouraged and disillusioned.

When you resolve to lose some weight, think long term. Instead of a diet, plan on forming a new habit. Plan on a new way of eating and moving that you intend to do for the rest of your life.

Sometimes we see this in our practice. Many people see their Chiropractic care as a short-term “diet” of sorts.

They come in religiously when they’re hurting, but discontinue their care when they’re feeling better.
Not surprisingly later, they experience a return of their original problem.

That’s because your body makes lasting spinal changes with continued care after symptoms subside.

In fact, in many cases because of so many years of neglect, a full correction isn’t possible.

Instead, some type of ongoing supportive care is needed. Kind of like brushing and flossing for the rest of your life. It’s a lifestyle choice.

So rather than a brief episode, getting and keeping our nervous systems interference-free is a lifestyle choice.

That’s why we have more and more patients who opt to see us on a monthly or twice-monthly basis.

They’re the ones that tried the Chiropractic diet a couple of times and decided to go for the Chiropractic lifestyle.

Cheers to a healthier 2021! 😃

TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Stress. Tension. Fear. Worry. Doubt. All feelings we have experienced throughout 2020.

As we approach the holidays, we just wanted to send a reminder to you, our incredible patients, to take care of your bodies so they’ll take care of you.

From your diet to exercise routines to adjustments, be mindful of what you’re doing to fuel your body to keep it as strong and healthy as possible. The holidays may look and feel different this year, but that doesn’t mean you and your family can’t feel your best.

Here are a few tips for this season:

• Limit sweets – We know it’s hard, and it’s fun to indulge every now and then, but too much sugar can have negative effects on your body and mind.

• Move, move, move – Exercise does wonders for body and mind. Get out and move as much as you can. Take family walks, park in the farthest parking spot at the store and take the stairs whenever you can. Little movements add up.

• Get adjusted – Don’t let aches and pains keep you from doing the other things you need to do to stay healthy. Give us a call and we’ll get you in for an adjustment.

Happy & Safe Holidays Everyone!🎄

Heat or Ice?
Which is Better for Your Pain?

Have you ever found yourself with an ache or pain wondering, “Should I apply heat or ice?”

Here we’ll explain which situations call for heat and which call for ice, as well as what to do if neither is helping.

First off, a general rule of thumb is to use ice for recent, acute injuries that are less than 6 weeks old and heat for long-term injuries that have been persisting for over 6 weeks.

The reason is ice constricts blood vessels, numbing pain and reducing inflammation, which is what you need for a new injury.

Heat, on the other hand, increases blood flow to relax tight muscles and aching joints. Heat can increase inflammation in certain injuries, so give us a call if you are unsure which to use for your particular injury.

Heat is often best for:
• Arthritis
• Headaches caused by neck spasms
• Muscle spasms
• Tendinosis
• Relieving stiffness of sprains/strains after inflammation has resolved

Ice is best for:
• New injuries
• Strains and sprains
• Sports injuries
• Throbbing headaches
• Gout flare-ups
• Tendinitis (commonly in the shoulder, elbow, knee and wrist)

Applying Heat and Ice:
A bag of frozen peas/corn or a gel-pack you can purchase at the office, makes a great ice pack that molds to the injured area. Conversely, a warm bath, heat wrap, or heating pad can be used for heat therapy.

Depending on the size of the area... Neck/Shoulder area apply heat or ice for 10-12 minutes and for Low Back 15-20 minutes at a time, taking a break of at least 30 minutes in between sessions.

Remove the heat or ice if it becomes uncomfortable. And do not apply ice directly to the skin - wrap it in a lightweight cloth or towel.

When the Pain Isn’t Improving:
If at-home heat or ice therapy isn’t improving your condition, give us a call. We’ll get you in for a visit to see if we can help.
