The Rabbit Nest Protection Hack 🐰

Found a cottontail nest in your lawn? Here's the 3-week plan.

🛑 1. The Problem: Vulnerable Babies

Baby cottontails are in your lawn because it's SAFER than thick brush (they can see predators coming). But they're vulnerable to:
- Lawn mowers
- Pets
- Curious humans
- Children

✅ 2. The 3-Week Protection Plan:

IMMEDIATE:
- Mark the nest (flag, garden stake, anything visible)
- Create 3-foot "no mow" zone around it
- Tell everyone in household

DAILY:
- Keep pets out of that area (temporary fencing works)
- Check from distance (don't touch nest)
- If grass gets long, hand-trim around edges

WEEKLY PROGRESS:
- Week 1: Eyes closed, ears flat, helpless
- Week 2: Eyes open, ears up, starting to move
- Week 3: Leaving nest for short trips
- Week 4: GONE

🔋 3. The "Is Mom Coming?" Test

If you're worried mom is dead:
- Make a tic-tac-toe pattern with string over nest
- Check at dawn
- If pattern is disturbed, mom is feeding them

💡 Pro Tip: If cat/dog discovered nest, put a laundry basket over it with a heavy rock on top. Mom can squeeze through gaps; predators can't.

The Brick Hack: Saving the "Thirsty Ones." 🧱💧

In winter, liquid water is scarce, and dehydration impacts wildlife more than starvation.

🛑 The Problem: Ice Prison
- Birds lose 10% of body weight daily through breathing.
- Squirrels and chipmunks can't access frozen surfaces.
- Rabbits eat snow, risking hypothermia.
- Opossums and raccoons trek miles for water.
- Deer crowd at unfrozen spots, spreading disease.

✅ The Solution: Passive Solar Heating
- Place a dark brick in a shallow dish with 1-2 inches of water, catching morning sunlight.
- The brick warms the water, delaying freezing.

Why It Works:
- Dark bricks can reach over 50°F even in 25°F air.
- Water stays liquid longer, accessible to wildlife.

Who Uses It:
- Birds (for drinking and bathing)
- Squirrels and chipmunks
- Rabbits
- Opossums and raccoons
- Even foxes!

🔋 Energy Math:
Drinking liquid water = energy gain; eating snow = energy loss.

💡 Bonus Tip: Float a dark tennis ball in the water to resist freezing!
