It's that time of year again. You know, that time when the snow flakes start to sneak in along with all kinds of viral infections. We thought now might be a good time to share some information on Hand Foot and Mouth disease.
What is it?
A viral infection caused by the Coxsackie virus that most commonly affects children under the age of 5.
What are the symptoms?
Fever, small ulcers in the mouth, skin rash presenting on predominantly the hands and feet, headache, loss of appetite, stomach upset
How is it spread?
Through contact with an infected person's saliva or stool. It is most contagious during the first week of illness, but the virus can be found in stool for up to 4 weeks.
What can parents do?
- Acetaminophen/ibuprofen can help reduce discomfort from the sores - speak with one of our pharmacists about options today
- Encourage frequent hand washing!
- Offering plenty of fluids! Stick with bland, cold fluids like milk or water rather than fruit juices as they can sting the sores! Frozen yogurt might be a great option.
- Leave the blisters alone, they will heal on their own with time.
Call you doctor if your child is:
- showing signs of dehydration
- has severe headache, vomiting, confusion
