Grief doesn’t always go away on its own. When left unaddressed, it can linger and impact our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. If you’re struggling with grief, here are 10 signs that it may be unresolved:

1. Persistent Sadness or Depression – Feeling stuck in sadness for an extended period of time, where joy seems distant or unattainable.
2. Avoidance of Reminders – You avoid people, places, or even talking about the loss because it feels too painful.
3. Emotional Numbness – Feeling disconnected or detached from emotions, like you’re going through the motions but not really feeling.
4. Intense Anger or Irritability – You may find yourself easily frustrated or angry, sometimes over small things that normally wouldn’t trigger you.
5. Physical Symptoms – Unexplained fatigue, trouble sleeping, headaches, or other physical issues that don’t seem to go away.
6. Difficulty Moving Forward – Struggling to make decisions or feeling like you’re unable to move on with life, even after a long period of time.
7. Guilt or Regret – Feeling like you could’ve done more or should’ve done things differently, even though you did the best you could at the time.
8. Isolation – Withdrawing from friends and family, avoiding social situations because you feel disconnected or “too tired” to engage.

Every parent of loss seems to go through a period of denial because the truth of losing a child is too much to handle all at once. After that the cries go out to God asking “why”. Why did you allow this to happen? Why didn’t you take me instead? Why my child? And, in the end there is the realization that nothing can change what happened. After years of processing there comes a time when the reality of loss is accepted. Only then can life begin to move on. The grief will stay forever, it it will grow softer as the years pass.
