Subject: Respiratory Outbreak Declared Over
We are happy to share the good news that the respiratory outbreak at Extendicare Kirkland Lake has officially been declared over, effective April 16th, 2026, in consultation with Public Health!
During the outbreak, cases of respiratory illness were identified, including Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and human metapneumovirus (hMPV). Based on testing and symptom patterns, RSV was the virus that primarily spread during this outbreak.
Public Health has confirmed that the required criteria to declare the outbreak over have been met, including:
• No new cases identified over the required monitoring period
• Resolution and improvement of symptoms in affected residents and staff
• Continued use of appropriate infection prevention and control measures throughout
Although the outbreak has ended, respiratory viruses such as RSV continue to circulate in the community. We kindly remind everyone to continue practicing everyday infection prevention measures:
• Please do not visit if you are feeling unwell, even with mild cold symptoms
• Perform hand hygiene when entering and exiting the home
• Follow cough and sneeze etiquette
• Support loved ones in staying home from activities if they are not feeling well
Our team will continue to closely monitor residents and work with Public Health to respond quickly if any new symptoms arise.
We would like to sincerely thank residents, families, visitors, and staff for your patience, cooperation, and understanding during this time. We recognize that outbreaks can be stressful and disruptive, and your support—especially with visiting precautions and illness screening—helped protect our residents and staff.
Warm regards,
K.Madill IPAC
