How much time should you rest after you've sustained a concussion? 🧠⁠

🌓 MYTH: The more you rest and sleep, the better you will feel. ⁠

🌗 REALITY: You shouldn't rest completely for longer then 24-48 hours. After which, you should start to walk daily for 20 minutes and reassess your symptoms. ⁠

Do you have pain on the side of your jaw, right in front of your ears ⁉️
Do you have wear and tear on your teeth⁉️ (ask your dentist at your next appointment)
Do you grind your teeth at night or clench your jaw during the day ⁉️ (ask your partner if you're not sure)

Maybe it's time for you to get a custom made mouth guard by a dentist?!

Why custom made?
🌟 It will hold in place all night long.
🌟 You will tolerate it a lot better and get use to it in no time.
🌟 It will last much longer!

Are you looking for a therapist who can address your migraines ⁉️

Most people suffering from headaches and/or migraines need help desperately but don't know where to start.

Here are some questions that can help you get started:
👉 Do you keep a journal of your episodes? To know how often they occur, how long they last and their intensity. Also to find out if your medication is the right one for you.
👉 Do you know your triggers? Are they more hormonal, nutritional, etc.
👉 Are you followed by a neurologist? Do you qualify for a preventative daily medication?
👉 Do you know how much medication you take a day, a week and a month? To avoid rebound medication.
👉 Have you determine where your migraines are located? The exact location can help determine if you suffer from migraines, cervicogenic headaches, tension headaches or rebound migraines.

The more information you have on your headaches and/or migraines, the more the professional will be able to help you.

⬇️ Seeing a therapist can certainly help decrease how much medication you need to make it through your day.

Do you have chronic pain when you move your wrist, thumb or fingers? 👎
..do you have some pain when you bring your hand back? That could be the entensor muscles on your hand.
..do you have pain when you bring your thumb back? That could be what we call De Quervain syndrome or maybe the little bones (the carpals) are inflamed such as the scaphoid.
..do you have pain at your elbow when bringing your hand back? That could be a tennis elbow.

⏳ Have you been in pain for more then 3 weeks!

⚖️ Don't know if you should apply ice or cold?

🤔 Wondering which therapists to go see?

🆘 I recommend to reach out to a health professional that you trust.💙 They will know who to refer you to, but if you've been in pain for three weeks on and off, it's time to get some help!

Keep going🏃🏼‍♀️...they say!

We are constantly influenced
by commercials on TV ("Advil & Go) and
by the norms of society to keep going, but what if you can't? 🤷🏼

If you suffer from headaches or migraines, there are days were you can't function, but what do you do if you have to go to work, you have an exam or you need to pick up the kids?

You turn to medications. 💊🩺

Did you know that this same medication that is suppose to help you and decrease your pain can in fact be one of the biggest culprits?! 😱

Rebound headaches are caused by long-term use of medications (> 10 pills/month). The headache comes on very quickly and can last anywhere from 2-10 days.

⚠️ 10 pills a month is nothing for someone suffering from chronic headaches and migraines.

Nothing you will attempt (i.e. lifestyle changes, cutting down on coffee, getting more sleep, etc.) will work if you have rebound headaches. You need to go to the source of the problem and tackle this issue first 💪

Do you need hand therapy? 🖐️

Did you know that finding an occupational therapist in the private sector can be very difficult?

Most of them work in the public sector and it can take months before you can see one. 🏥

Thankfully, works with us. She treats all kinds of hand conditions and fabricates custom made orthosis. 👏

Yes! You read this well! She fabricates the orthosis herself after conducting a thorough evaluation to:
1. Optimize function
2. Decrease pain
3. Decrease inflammation
4. Allowing the affected tendons to rest

These two orthosis are for the same problem, but they look quite different to fit the needs of each person.

➡️ They're called Long Spica orthosis for DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis (a specific type of tendinitis of the thumb).

⚠️ She will only advise for an orthosis should you really need it! She always prioritize function over immobilization!

🤔 What to expect when you book an Athletic Therapy session?

It has occured to me that some people simply don't know what happens in a therapy session. Not knowing what to expect can prevent you from getting the care you need.

So here it is...

BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT
👉 Plan to dress in comfortable clothes (leggings or sweat pants are ideal with a t-shirt) to allow you to move comfortably.
👉 You can send your medical test reports ahead of time to the clinic or bring them with you at your appointment. This allows your therapist to be better prepared.
📞 You always have the right to speak to your therapist before the first appointment if you are worried about something or would like to ask a question.
🛗 Know that we have an elevator for elderly clients, parents with a stroller or patients with limited mobility.

AT THE APPOINTMENT
🚻 You should go the washroom before if possible.
👉 The first portion will be a series of questions regarding the problem you are facing (no need to have all the exact dates and timeline 😜).
👉 Second will be a series a small physical tests: some done by the therapist and some done by YOU.
👉 The therapist will treat you with their hands to improve the movement of the affected segment, releasing the tensions and decreasing the pain.
👉 You will receive some exercises to be done at home. (Exercises aren't given to everyone, it all depends on what YOU can do.)
