Today is Topic Tuesday and our topic of the day is Fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a medical condition characterized by chronic widespread pain and a heightened pain response to pressure. It stems from a problem with the way the nervous system processes pain signals. The main symptoms are pain and tenderness in muscles and joints throughout your body. At times the pain can be severe enough to keep you home from work and participating in activities.
Many people with Fibromyalgia experience tiredness and lack of energy. This in itself can outweigh the pain. A number of other symptoms include:

➡ Depression or anxiety
➡ Trouble sleeping
➡ Headaches
➡ Trouble concentrating
➡ Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet
➡ Lack of energy

At South West Ontario Pain Interventions (SWOPI) we have an evidence based Fibromyalgia program that uses a multifaceted approach to bring you long term comfort. Our team is dedicated to helping you get on the track to relief so you can cope with Fibromyalgia and improve your overall health and wellness. No one should have to live with pain day in and day out. Learn more about us and and our referral program on our website https://www.swopi.ca/referrals/

It’s Tuesday and that means it is time to highlight another treatment model available at South West Pain. For todays Topic Tuesday post we are focusing on Radio Frequency Ablation.

Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) is a procedure used for reducing pain and generally provides long term relief. RFA can be used to help patients with chronic (long-lasting) low-back pain and pain related to the degeneration of joints from arthritis. In addition Scientific medical research of RFA of the knee joint has been done which resulted in a significant reduction in knee pain and improvement of the knees function for a minimum of three months.

How does it work?
RFA targets pain in a specific area. Heat energy is sent to the nerve tissue to stop / curb pain signals. Sometimes the procedure is also known as Rhizotomy when it is applied to certain nerves around the spine. It is a non – surgical and minimally invasive procedure usually requiring no sedation.

Have questions or want to learn more? Visit our website www.swopi.ca to learn about RFA and other services provided at South West Pain Interventions.

Today is our first post in our Topic Tuesday series where we highlight various treatment models available at SWOPI that might help you to deal with your chronic pain.

Up first we have Intravenous Lidocaine / Ketamine Infusions. What is it?

Lidocaine infusion (alone or in combination with ketamine) have been around for decades and have shown promising results in relieving pain of various conditions. Our physicians are well versed in using them, in small sub-anesthetic doses aimed to relieve pain of various conditions.

The procedure requires an IV to be established and takes about an hour on average. It is recommended to not have any food for 6 hours before the procedure. and you will need someone to drive you home.

Who is it for:
Patients that have serious pain syndrome and have had no luck or made minimal progress with other conventional treatment options.

Common uses include treatment of:

✅ Chronic neuropathic (nerve) pain syndromes
✅ Fibromyalgia
✅ Chronic pain with central sensitization

Can radio frequency treat chronic knee pain? Yes it is a possibility.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a technique used to help reduce chronic pain. Scientific medical research of RFA of the knee joint has been done which resulted in a significant reduction in knee pain and improvement of the knees function for a minimum of three months. You can review this research on the National Library of Medicine’s website using this link: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6151104/

Who could benefit from RFA of the knee joint?
You may benefit if you have knee osteoarthritis and you are:

• awaiting knee replacement
• having persistent pain after total knee replacement
• not a candidate for surgery
• wanting to delay joint replacement.

What can you expect if you decide to proceed with RFA treatment?

RFA treatment is a simple outpatient procedure done under local anesthesia It is a nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedure that is well tolerated and typically requires no sedation.
