THE HEART ATTACK THAT NOBODY SAW COMING π
Black women have a 1 in 3 chance of dying from heart disease. But most of us don't even know we're at risk. And menopause? It changes everything.
Why menopause matters for your heart:
β Estrogen protects your cardiovascular system (it's a vasodilator, reduces inflammation)
β When estrogen drops, that protection disappears
β Your blood vessels become stiffer + less flexible
β Inflammation increases dramatically
β Blood pressure becomes harder to control
β Cholesterol patterns shift (often unfavorably)
The Black woman factor:
π€ We're diagnosed LATER (often after damage is already done)
π€ Our symptoms are dismissed ("It's just anxiety")
π€ We're less likely to be prescribed preventive medications
π€ Chronic stress from racism literally damages the heart
π€ Less access to cardiac rehabilitation programs
Warning signs (that often get dismissed):
β’ Chest pain or pressure (especially with exertion)
β’ Shortness of breath (not just from menopause)
β’ Fatigue that's different from your normal menopause fatigue
β’ Jaw pain, neck pain, shoulder pain
β’ Nausea or indigestion
β’ Palpitations or irregular heartbeat
What you need to do NOW:
β
Get your baseline: blood pressure, cholesterol, fasting glucose
β
Ask about cardiovascular screening (don't wait for symptoms)
β
Discuss HRT with a menopause-informed cardiologist (it can protect your heart)
β
Move your body regularly (cardio + strength training)
β
Manage stress (it's not optional, it's medicine)
β
Know your family history
β
Find a doctor who takes your concerns seriously
Your heart is literally keeping you alive. Protect it like your life depends on it. Because it does.
