Labour doulas provide continuous care during labour. Postpartum doulas support the new mom during the first few weeks after birth. They help with infant care, feeding of the baby and household tasks. Fertility doulas support couples or single mothers through their journey of conception, whether you’re trying to conceive naturally or you’re going to a fertility clinic to discuss medical options, your fertility doula will be right there to help you. Doulas meet with you during your second or third trimester to get acquainted
• Teach you relaxation and breathing skills
• Teach you how to advocate for yourselves
• Answer your questions about the birthing process
• Help you understand labour and delivery procedures and possible complications
• Help you develop a birth plan
During labour, the doula will:
• Stay consistently by your side to provide comfort and support
• Use massage and touch to help you relax and rest
• Help you get into comfortable positions
• Help you get adequate nutrition and fluids
• Help you advocate for your preferences to the medical staff
• Involve and reassure the non-birthing parent
After delivery, a doula can:
• Provide support and encouragement to both you and your partner after bringing your baby home
• Teach both of you how to care for your new baby
• Assist with nursing/pumping/bottle feeding education
• Be a support to your partner and other siblings and teach them how to help you
• Make sure you get plenty of rest, eat regularly, stay hydrated, and are comfortable
