Independent Living Waterloo Region is looking for new voices at their Board table. We are recruiting volunteers to join our Board of Directors and its Committees.

This is a chance to share your skills, perspective, and lived experience with an organization that has supported Independent Living in our community for nearly 45 years.

We are looking for people with experience in governance, finance, HR, legal, and technology as well as those with lived experience of disability.

If you care about accessibility, inclusion, and strong community leadership, this could be a meaningful way to get involved.

Applications will be received until June 4.

If this feels like a fit, or if you know someone who would bring valuable insight to this work, please reach out or share this post.

National Volunteer Week in Canada runs from April 19–25, 2026, recognizing the 12.7 million volunteers who strengthen Canadian communities!

Volunteering helps strengthen social connections, build new skills, and foster personal growth, resilience, and community connection.

In recognition of National Volunteer Week, we would like to thank the many individuals who volunteer their time and expertise to ILWR: our Board of Directors, Paula and Gerard supporting our Tournament of Hope, and those who help with the Community Resource Program activities.

Thank you Waterloo Region Community Foundation for sharing and writing the impact of our Community Resource Program in our Waterloo Region community and neighbours!

Independent Living Waterloo Region has served the community for more than 40 years. Its vision is an inclusive community where those with disabilities are supported to live independently and thrive.

Their Community Resource program received support through WRCF’s Community Grants and two WRCF Fundholders.

“With WRCF’s funding, we were able to run 36 programs and activities, which supported 160 participants.” - Dan Lajoie, Manager of Independent Living Resources at Independent Living Waterloo Region

We are happy to congratulate Donna as the winner of the 2025 ILWR Holiday 50/50 Draw!

Donna didn’t just walk away with a prize, she shared a story that reminded us what community really looks like.

She’s been connected to Independent Living Waterloo Region for more than two decades, continuing the work because, as she put it, “I’m happy where I am. That’s why I’m good at what I do.” For Donna, showing up fully matters – Enthusiasm included!

A proud parent of five adult children and a grandparent to eight grandchildren, she brings that same care, humour, and energy into everything she does. She also shared, with a laugh, that she is “very happily divorced,” and firmly believes that if you wake up dreading your day, it’s time to make a change.

When she realized she had won the 50/50 draw, without hesitation, chose to give a portion back to support Consumers accessing the Community Resource Program.

This is the ripple effect of community support. A draw becomes connection. A prize becomes generosity. And enthusiasm stays exactly where it belongs.

Congratulations Donna and thank you to everyone who supported the draw and helped make moments like this possible.

We look forward to next year’s 50/50 draw. Until then, please visit https://ilwr.ca/donate/ to help support people with disabilities in our community.
