A friendly reminder that your baby's instinctual behaviours are rooted in survival. These important behaviours are hardwired to not only help to keep them safe, warm & protected - but to help build & protect your milk supply too!
Fun Fact: Humans are "carry" mammals! Like other carry mammals, we give birth to extremely underdeveloped babies who feed frequently & rely on us to carry them with us to keep them warm, safe, healthy & protected. The babies of "Cache" mammals on the other hand, rely on staying hidden for protection. In order to help keep their location secret, cache mammals visit their babies as infrequently as possible. The nutritional needs & milk of carry mammals & cache mammals is also incredibly different! Cache mammals like deer & rabbits have milk with a nutrient balance that keeps their babies full & quiet for long periods of time with minimal feeds. Carry mammals like us have milk with a vastly different nutrient balance - perfect for babies who are kept close & allowed to nurse as frequently as they need to!
Trust your body & your instincts, & remember that so often it's society's expectation of babies that are the problem, not your baby. Nursing, or not... you are your baby's safe place!🥰 Know that responding to your baby's needs helps them feel safe & loved - trust them to know when they are ready to explore the world. Responding to their needs helps build their confidence as they know they can trust you to be there to support them. Your little one will grow more independent in time. You are doing a good job!🎉
Life with a can feel overwhelming at times - remember to be gentle with yourself. Learning to nourish & care for a baby & yourself is hard but important work. Be kind with yourself & remember the most important thing you can do is connect with support!
