Breastfeeding Buddies Waterloo Region

Breastfeeding Buddies Waterloo Region Providing FREE Peer to Peer Lactation Support in Waterloo Region and Beyond. Some in person programming will resume as Covid-19 restrictions change.

The Breastfeeding Buddies Program was initiated by breastfeeding mothers in the community and has been supporting families in Waterloo Region for the last 20 years. Recognizing the value of peer-to-peer support, the aim of the Breastfeeding Buddies Program is to help increase the number of parents achieving success in reaching *their* breastfeeding and chestfeeding goals - by supporting parents with the evidence based tools, resources and information they need to make informed decisions. Breastfeeding Buddies also help parents foster connections with other nursing families and their community through virtual programming and other local events. All of our peer volunteers have at least 6 months of personal breastfeeding or chestfeeding experience, complete a 3 day training program, and receive additional education opportunities to provide quality, non judgmental, evidenced based support to other nursing families. The Me Breastfeed workshop is a prenatal class for parents and their partners to attend before the baby arrives. This practical workshop offers parents and their partner's valuable information as to what to expect in the first 7 days after birth, help with overcoming common challenges, and where to find community resources. The "Latch and Learn" and "Beyond Basics" series cover many topics such as transitioning into parenthood, milk supply, night time parenting and nursing beyond a year. All families are welcome!

A friendly reminder that your baby's instinctual behaviours are rooted in survival. These important behaviours are hardwired to not only help to keep them safe, warm & protected - but to help build & protect your milk supply too!

Fun Fact: Humans are "carry" mammals! Like other carry mammals, we give birth to extremely underdeveloped babies who feed frequently & rely on us to carry them with us to keep them warm, safe, healthy & protected. The babies of "Cache" mammals on the other hand, rely on staying hidden for protection. In order to help keep their location secret, cache mammals visit their babies as infrequently as possible. The nutritional needs & milk of carry mammals & cache mammals is also incredibly different! Cache mammals like deer & rabbits have milk with a nutrient balance that keeps their babies full & quiet for long periods of time with minimal feeds. Carry mammals like us have milk with a vastly different nutrient balance - perfect for babies who are kept close & allowed to nurse as frequently as they need to!

Trust your body & your instincts, & remember that so often it's society's expectation of babies that are the problem, not your baby. Nursing, or not... you are your baby's safe place!🥰 Know that responding to your baby's needs helps them feel safe & loved - trust them to know when they are ready to explore the world. Responding to their needs helps build their confidence as they know they can trust you to be there to support them. Your little one will grow more independent in time. You are doing a good job!🎉

Life with a can feel overwhelming at times - remember to be gentle with yourself. Learning to nourish & care for a baby & yourself is hard but important work. Be kind with yourself & remember the most important thing you can do is connect with support!

🤧Does your baby have a stuffy nose? Give the Koala hold a try! This position helps keep your little one upright as they feed, which can help make nursing easier while they are congested. You can also try slowly reclining during the nursing session, to help transition them to a more horizontal position they can rest in afterwards.

🤱🏾The Koala nursing position is also a great choice for babies who need to be kept upright after a feed, and can also be helpful for babies who need a little help to manage high milk flow more easily.

👉Ready to give the Koala hold a try? Wish you had a few more comfortable nursing positions in your repertoire? Have questions about your milk supply or latch? We're here to help! Visit the link in our bio to connect with our FREE Virtual and In-Person support options.

If the latch "looks fine" but still doesn't feel right it's definitely time to check in with support and get a second opinion - especially if it feels like this!🔥🔥 🔥

🚩While your latch may not feel quite so fiery - it's still worth seeking support! Often a few tiny adjustments can make a world of difference. In addition to helping you feel more comfortable, fine tuning your baby's latch and position helps your baby get a deeper, more effective latch - which helps them get milk more easily which in turn helps you and your baby build and protect your milk supply together.

👉So when should you reach out for support? Any time you feel uncertain, have questions, are uncomfortable or are in pain (at any point in your nursing journey) it's definitely worthwhile to check-in with skilled support. For FREE personalized support to help build and protect your milk supply and get a deeper more comfortable latch visit the link in our bio! Sometimes babies need a little help getting more milk. Here are some great ways you can help your little one get the milk they need while protecting your breastfeeding or chestfeeding relationship. Connecting with skilled support from an IBCLC can make narrowing down the right tool for you and your situation easier and help you perfect your technique.🥰

👉Remember that milk making is all about supply and demand, so if your goal is to grow or maintain your milk supply it's important to hand express or pump while feeding is happening away from the breast or chest. It may take a bit of experimentation to figure out what works best for you, your little one and your unique situation. Visit the link in our bio to learn more about local lactation supports.📲🥰
