Breastfeeding Buddies Waterloo Region

Breastfeeding Buddies Waterloo Region Providing FREE Peer to Peer Lactation Support in Waterloo Region and Beyond. Some in person programming will resume as Covid-19 restrictions change.

The Breastfeeding Buddies Program was initiated by breastfeeding mothers in the community and has been supporting families in Waterloo Region for the last 20 years. Recognizing the value of peer-to-peer support, the aim of the Breastfeeding Buddies Program is to help increase the number of parents achieving success in reaching *their* breastfeeding and chestfeeding goals - by supporting parents with the evidence based tools, resources and information they need to make informed decisions. Breastfeeding Buddies also help parents foster connections with other nursing families and their community through virtual programming and other local events. All of our peer volunteers have at least 6 months of personal breastfeeding or chestfeeding experience, complete a 3 day training program, and receive additional education opportunities to provide quality, non judgmental, evidenced based support to other nursing families. The Me Breastfeed workshop is a prenatal class for parents and their partners to attend before the baby arrives. This practical workshop offers parents and their partner's valuable information as to what to expect in the first 7 days after birth, help with overcoming common challenges, and where to find community resources. The "Latch and Learn" and "Beyond Basics" series cover many topics such as transitioning into parenthood, milk supply, night time parenting and nursing beyond a year. All families are welcome!

YES! You can absolutely help! It just might not look like you thought it would, because while offering bottles may seem like a great way to help, it often comes at a cost for nursing parents.

In order to make sure their milk supply continues to match their baby's needs (and to avoid painful issues like engorgement, blocked ducts and mastitis) it's important to hand express or pump each time the baby is being fed away from the breast/chest.

So while a bottle may seem to be helpful at first, for most nursing families it actually means extra time spent expressing milk, washing dishes and missed opportunities for more rest.

Luckily there are lots of other ways to help nourish the baby by sharing a little love and support! Which one is your favourite? Looking for more ways to offer help or bond with the new baby? We can help! Visit the link in our bio to connect.

Planning on spending some time connecting today 😉❤️‍🔥? Read this first!
Doing things that make you feel good will naturally raise your oxytocin levels🥰. Oxytocin (sometimes called the love hormone) is also responsible for your letdown, meaning that for some, the good feelings that come with *spicy time* are sometimes accompanied by unexpected sprays of milk.

Remember, it's normal to experience a letdown during this time and it's normal not to - neither are an indication of your milk supply and it may change, lessen or even stop as time goes on. With any relationship communication is key - so talk to your partner if you're feeling nervous about the possibilities and decide what works best for the two of you.

👉Feel like you'd rather keep your milk to yourself? Some find it helpful to wear a bra/top (with nursing pads) while others prefer to keep a towel nearby to catch/clean up the milk. Others find gentle pressure is enough to help block the flow. Nursing or pumping beforehand can also lessen the likelihood of milk being released.

Nursing your little one and thinking about ? Consider the following:

👉Fasting for religious reasons? It may be helpful to investigate your options as many religions have exemptions for pregnant and lactating people.

🔋Energy demands: The age of your nursling & how often they feed is an important factor. The amount of energy you need to make enough milk for an older child who feeds only a few times a day, is very different from the energy you need to nurse a younger infant who feeds often or depends on your milk as their main source of nutrition.

📏What about my milk supply? A short period of lowered food intake is unlikely to lower your As long as you were previously healthy & well nourished, it's likely you could continue to make normal amounts of milk while your body uses up the energy and nutrients it stored during pregnancy.

🧑🏽‍🔬Research on fasting and breastfeeding for tells us that even though the mothers in the study typically took in slightly less food than the recommended daily amount for lactating people, the nutrient levels in their milk stayed fairly constant, & did not significantly impact the growth of the infants. Consider adding complex carbohydrates to your meals that take time to digest.

🚰Some people who fast during daylight hours choose to take in more water at night to try to compensate for a lack of fluids during the day. Keep in mind that significant hyper-hydration (too much fluid) & dehydration (not enough fluid) have been shown to decrease milk supply over time. Be cautious if you plan to drastically increase your water intake at night.

🚼You may notice your baby wants to nurse more often while you are fasting, this can be normal - but if your baby is overly fussy, has fewer wet or dirty diapers than usual, or if you're concerned at anytime that your baby isn't getting enough milk, stop fasting & consult with your healthcare provider.

⚠️Safety First: *ALWAYS* talk to your healthcare provider before making changes to your diet. They can give you the information you need to decide if fasting is right for you & your unique situation. Need support? Visit our website or tap the link in our bio.
