We are exited to share about this new collaboration! 🎶

For generations, humans have turned to song as a source of community, wellness and joy. Especially in times of deep grief, fear and uncertainty, singing together can nourish the soul providing a safe space to express emotions while discovering hope and solidarity in a shared community. These free, community-oriented sessions will provide an opportunity to learn and sing heartfelt and hopeful songs from resistance communities of many times and places. These simple, yet powerful songs can draw us into spaces of reflection and spur us towards action. Willing participants of all abilities, ages, and backgrounds are welcome! No formal musical or singing abilities are necessary - this is not a choir, and there's no performance.

Please register in advance to save your spot, spaces are somewhat limited.

Sessions will be facilitated by Branches member and local music educator Anna Janecek. Anna (she/her) is passionate about creating empowering music-making opportunities with people of all ages and abilities. With music degrees from both the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto, her background is in voice, piano, choral conducting and music education. Her experiences working with both adults and children include community and church-based choirs, educational settings and musical theatre. She is thrilled to collaborate with The Branches to combine music, community and social justice awareness in this special space.

Thanks for joining us for this little trip down memory lane this week!

💛 We have so much gratitude for our community - To everyone who’s practiced with us for a season or for decades. To those who’ve shown up open-minded, tired, joyful, grieving, curious, or strong. You are the reason this studio exists.

We are blown away, humbled, and so so grateful that our independent studio has thrived for TWO decades. Here’s to more growth and more branching out for another 20! 🌟

We've love to hear any memories you have from the past 20 years in the comments! ⬇️

Our approach to movement has evolved alongside our community and as our teaching staff continue studying and learning.

From yoga asana to functional movement, from teacher training to lifting barbells and cheering each other on — being together means growing, adapting, and learning over time.

The practice keeps evolving, our intention to offer care and connection has stayed the same.

Over time, The Branches has grown into a carefully tended ecosystem.
Teachers who’ve planted themselves here. Work-trades who’ve cared for the space.

So many folks started in one role and grew into another - Wendy began as a work-trade, then started teaching, and since 2021 has been a cornerstone of the studio as Operations Wizard. Leslie started by creating gorgeous chalkboards, then became a teacher, joined the admin team, and later took a bold leap to become a co-owner of the building and business during our move and our rebirth as The Branches in 2021.

Together, our staff feels more like an extended family than a workplace. There have been countless potlucks, board game nights, meal trains during illness, help with moves, painting parties, baby showers, retreats, and many moments spent sitting in a circle, sharing and listening with care.

This place thrives because of the people who tend it — day in and day out - and we're so grateful for each of those special people!

Queen Street Yoga and The Branches have always been shaped by collaboration.

Mentorship, friendship, shared leadership, shared values, and learning how to work together has been just as important as teaching yoga or running a successful business.

We’re deeply grateful for the people who have helped guide and grow this studio with care and intention.

Queen Street Yoga opened its doors in 2005 — up three big flights of stairs, into a sunny old ballroom with squeaky floors and so much heart.
Founded by Meaghan Johnson, this space quickly became more than a studio. It became a place to gather, learn, and belong.

Leena began mentoring with Meaghan and became studio manager around 2010. Later in 2012, Meaghan sold the studio to Leena, and Emma came on as manager. Then in 2021 Leena and Leslie purchased the building at Samuel Street and reopened the studio as The Branches.
Our roots in KW are deep and wide. 🌿

👋🏽Put your hand up in the comments if you practiced with us back on Queen Street! What do you remember about that amazing space?!

We love yoga. We love movement. But what’s carried this studio through renovations, relocations, a global pandemic, and countless life changes isn’t just the practice — it’s being together.

For 20 years, these two spaces have been about showing up, exactly as you are, and practicing side by side.

This year marks 20 years of Queen Street Yoga & The Branches 🌱
There are people in our community who practiced with us on Queen Street, others who’ve only ever known Samuel Street, and many who joined somewhere in between. This week, we’re sharing pieces of our story — where it began, how it’s grown, and what’s held it together all these years.
It feels important to pause and say thank you.

More reflections coming all week.

Join us in the comments to share a memory of the past 20 years! ⬇️

Our Story

We are a beautiful yoga studio with caring, fun, and well trained teachers. A small business that is about community, not commodity. A haven of sunshine, quiet and wide open space in the heart of busy downtown Kitchener. A place where people of varied demographics come together to learn and grow through the practices of yoga and meditation.
