- Every 20 minutes a Canadian is diagnosed with colore**al cancer; every hour another Canadian will die from it
- In Canada, colore**al cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for men and the third leading cause for women
- Rates of colon cancer are rising sharply among young and middle aged Canadians – people born after 1990 have twice the risk of developing colon cancer and four times the risk of developing re**al cancer
- Young people are often misdiagnosed or diagnosed at a later stage, because doctors don’t necessarily suspect colon cancer to be the cause of a younger person’s symptoms
- Symptoms of colore**al cancer include:
* Re**al bleeding
* Narrow stools
* Abdominal discomfort or pain
* Unexplained weight loss
* Change in bowel habits
* Fatigue or anemia
- Colore**al cancer screening should begin at age 50 in an average risk individual
- Risk factors for colore**al cancer include:
* Family history of colore**al cancer
* Obesity
* Smoking
* Excessive alcohol consumption
* Poor diet
* Sedentary lifestyle
* Personal history of polyps, cancer or inflammatory bowel disease
* Inherited genetic syndromes such as Lynch Syndrome or Familial Adenomatous Polyposis

- With regular screening, colon cancer is preventable, treatable, and beatable!

Today we are wearing blue to raise awareness and show support for those who have been touched by colore**al cancer.

Tri-City Colonoscopy Clinic (TCC) is excited to announce a new partnership with Cambridge Memorial Hospital (CMH) that will help expand and expedite community access to endoscopy services.

"COVID-19 disrupted our health care system and we were put in a position to find unique ways to help address the wait lists”, said Dr. Augustin Nguyen, gastroenterologist and TCC Medical Director. "As of July 2021, the hospital had a backlog of over 1600 endoscopy cases, which is much more than what it normally has in any given year. By transferring medically appropriate, low-complexity cases to TCC, we can expect to help the hospital offset as many as 500 cases on that list.”

The partnership goes into effect today, August 24, 2021.

March is Colore**al Cancer Awareness Month!

The first Friday in March is designated as Dress in Blue Day. Today, we are wearing blue to show support for patients, families, and communities that are touched by colore**al cancer.

- On average, 73 Canadians are diagnosed with colore**al cancer every day, and every day 27 will die of this preventable disease
- Colore**al cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related death for men and the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related death for women in Canada
- Colore**al cancer is preventable, treateable, and 90% beatable with early diagnosis
- Risk factors for developing colore**al cancer include sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, smoking, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, family history of colore**al cancer, and being over the age of 50
- Colore**al cancer can happen at any age – you are never too young for colore**al cancer

If you have any symptoms you are concerned about, including abdominal pain, change in bowel habits, re**al bleeding, or unexplained weight loss, talk to your family doctor about getting screened.

Fun fact: Over the last 5 years, Tri-City Colonoscopy Clinic has played a part in diagnosing 170 cases of colore**al cancer!

On Saturday, December 26, 2020, at 12:01 am, the province is entering a period of lockdown in order to help curb the spread of COVID-19. Lockdown measures will place a variety of restrictions and closures on a number of non-essential services, as per Ontario's COVID-19 Response Framework. As of right now, Tri-City Colonoscopy Clinic has not been mandated to close, and we plan to remain open to provide care for our valued patients. If you have an appointment booked in the coming weeks, your procedure will move forward as planned.

The safety of our patients is of utmost concern, and our stringent cleaning measures and physical distancing efforts will continue as per usual. In addition, further screening has been implemented at the booking and confirming of appointments, as well as at admission to the facility. Please bear with us as we work through another challenge and continue our efforts to provide high quality and safe care.

If the situation changes and Public Health or the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) issue new guidelines that include the closure of Tri-City Colonoscopy Clinic, we will make every effort to contact each and every patient who will be affected by the closure.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us by telephone at 519-650-2777, or by email at info@tcc-clinic.com. Your continued patience and understanding is very much appreciated.

An increase in the frequency of new colore**al cancer diagnoses in young adults has prompted the United States Preventive Service Task Force (USPSTF) to draft an update to their colore**al cancer screening guidelines. As per the proposed update, colore**al cancer screening should now begin at age 45, rather than 50.

The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has issued a draft recommendation to begin screening for colore**al cancer at age 45 years.

A little more than a month has passed since we began operating under this new normal. We have implemented new policies and procedures that focus on keeping our valuable patients and our staff healthy and safe, while still meeting our high standards in providing effective, efficient, and quality care.

As per Public Health guidelines, we are required to follow up with every patient after their procedure to determine if COVID-19 symptoms have developed since being seen at Tri-City Colonoscopy Clinic. If you have had a procedure at the clinic, you can expect a call from us two weeks after your procedure. We will be asking you if you have developed any symptoms such as a cough, fever, runny nose, difficulty breathing, or any other new symptoms that may be suggestive of COVID-19. If you are showing symptoms, we will ask you to get tested at any testing facility and to notify us of the results; in this way we can ensure that appropriate steps are taken to provide the necessary follow up for all our patients and staff members if required.

We appreciate your continued patience, understanding, and cooperation!

Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your health care team. As the province is beginning to reopen, we too are taking steps to begin resuming services for our valued patients. We are tentatively reopening on Monday, June 1, 2020.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation, we have made some changes to our policies and procedures in order to keep our patients and our staff safe moving forward. When you come in for your appointment, please be mindful of the following:

- Wear a mask or other face covering to your appointment
- Family members/rides should not wait in the clinic. Please ensure that you have contact information for the person who will be driving you home and our nurses will contact them by telephone when you are ready to go home.
- Bring minimal belongings with you to your appointment
- Be mindful and respectful of physical distancing
- Use hand sanitizer frequently and use good handwashing techniques
- We appreciate your kindness and patience as we navigate this new normal!

Note that each referral is reviewed by our physicians and then triaged based on urgency – please be patient as you await a phone call from us.

We appreciate your continued understanding, patience, and support as we move forward and we are eager to once again begin providing care!

Due to further developments with the COVID-19 pandemic, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) has mandated that all non-essential service clinics be closed. As such, Tri-City Colonoscopy Clinic will be closed until further notice. The situation will be reassessed on an ongoing basis and updates with be provided as appropriate.

If your appointment is one that is affected by this closure, rest assured that we will make every effort to contact you and speak with you in person.

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us via email at info@tcc-clinic.com or message us through Facebook. You can also reach out by phone at 519-650-2777; though your call may not be answered, messages will be checked daily.

If you feel that your problem is of an urgent nature, please reach out to your family physician for further direction.

Thank you for your continued understanding as we work through this together.
