Self care isn’t always warm blankets and positivity. Sadly there’s some work involved too. On day ten welcome 10 squats into your routine while brushing your teeth.

Why?

Because the blood/muscle pump returns blood to the heart when you move. Because when you’re 70 you want the strength to get off the couch or the toilet. Because cats tend to be low to the ground and you want to pet them.

On the ninth day of self care we run our feet. (Or arms, or hands, or knees)

You’ve worked hard. You’ve done the things. All the things. For all the people. Then cleaned up the things. Then put the things away. Whew!

Now is time to thank yourself. Thank your stamina, thank your go-get-it. Thank your just one more hour.

Today when you stop, whether that’s at the dinner table, in front of the tv, in a bath, or in bed; rub your feet. Say thank you to yourself. Set a nine minute timer. Enjoy some peppermint foot cream. Kneed away some tension.

On day eight of self care we find 8 things we’re grateful for, and make notes.

You might write them, you might say them, you might tell your dog.

Feeling stuck? Here are some examples;

1. You woke up today
2. Coffee exists
3. You own a favourite sweater
4. Your shower was hot
5. Someone said hello today
6. The library is open
7. Your neighbour is also shovelling
8. You touched your toes yesterday

On day seven we remind our toes we are connected!

Life gets busy. We forget we are entire beings, whole bodies in whatever beautiful form we take. Today touch your toes 7 times.

You might bend all the way forward and reach. You might put your foot up on a stool. You might say a prolonged hello while putting on your socks. You might use a shoe horn, a cane, a cat or hairbrush. Simply reach. Don’t make this harder than it needs to be. Touch your toes, and remember for an instant - you are an ENTIRE BEING, a whole wonderful person.

Side note - (because that’s where diversity lives) if you have no toes, pick a different body part. Your nose, your elbow, your belly button…. You are 100% an ENTIRE BEING.

On day six of this self care journey - gift yourself silence. When on a break at work (or end of day if you don’t get a break) close your eyes, close your ears, listen to nothing, be present for just you. Six entire minutes of letting the planet spin without your worry, your rumination, your planning. Six glorious minutes just for you and you alone.

Modification - because if it doesn’t fit, you won’t try it. If you’re blessed with constant helpers, try making it a game (who speaks first) or a reward (if you can make it until timer goes there’s a hot chocolate) or grant yourself the grace to be the one who is quiet, while the rest of the world isn’t. And be (try to be) accepting of that.

Welcome to day five! Today we are going to create a new habit. Are you standing and lost in a text chat? Or maybe a wee bit of doom scrolling? Quick! ‘Reward’ yourself with five calf raises. The hope is you’ll begin to create a link between phone use and movement. And one and two and three and four and five!!!

Welcome to day four!
Today we are practicing box breathing. Give /gift yourself 2 attentive minutes and try this out.

Breathe in to the count of four, three, two, one.

Hold for four, three, two, one.

Breathe out for four, three, two, one.

Hold for four, three, two, one.

Repeat that four times.

Rest is worth it! Mindfulness doesn’t have to cost you hours. Peace is yours to gift yourself.
