Why Heart Attacks Can Look Different in Women — And What Every Woman Should Know

Heart disease is not just a “man’s disease.” In Canada, it is one of the leading causes of death among women — even more common than many realize.
Women’s hearts and bodies are different, and that means heart attacks can present differently in women compared to men.

Women are often under-diagnosed and under-treated compared with men, and many aren’t aware that their symptoms might look different.
Understanding the signs could save a life. Knowledge really is power.

💥 Heart Attacks: Classic vs. Women’s Symptoms
The “classic” image of a heart attack — sudden crushing chest pain — comes mostly from how men experience them.

Women often do have chest discomfort, but it might feel more like pressure, squeezing, burning, or even indigestion. Women are also more likely to experience symptoms that aren’t as widely known, such as:
✔️Shortness of breath
✔️Unusual or extreme fatigue
✔️Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, upper back, or stomach
✔️Nausea or indigestion
✔️Sweating or light-headedness
✔️Dizziness or irregular heartbeat

Because these symptoms can be more subtle, up to half of women’s heart attacks go unrecognized — both by the women themselves and sometimes by healthcare providers.

Recognizing the signs of a heart attack early can mean faster treatment and better outcomes.
When women and those around them know what to look for, they’re more likely to act quickly — which can be the difference between life and death.
Every woman deserves to be informed about her heart health.

Fatty liver disease is more common — and more silent — than most people realize.

Many people assume liver problems only happen with alcohol use, but metabolic fatty liver (now called MASLD) affects about 1 in 4 adults in Canada — often developing quietly without obvious symptoms.

You might not feel anything at first, but early signs can include:
Unexplained fatigue
Abdominal weight gain
Insulin resistance or elevated blood sugar
High cholesterol or triglycerides

Fatty liver isn’t just about excess fat in the liver — it reflects deeper metabolic imbalances like blood sugar dysregulation, gut health challenges, nutrient deficiencies, and lifestyle factors.

The good news? In many cases, fatty liver can be reversed, especially when caught early.

At Sage, naturopathic care focuses on supporting the root causes through:
✔️ Nutrition strategies that support blood sugar balance
✔️ Movement to improve insulin sensitivity
✔️ Evidence-based supplements and liver-supportive nutrients
✔️ Gut health and metabolic support
✔️ Sustainable lifestyle changes tailored to YOU

Your liver plays a major role in detoxification, hormone balance, digestion, and metabolism — supporting it can have ripple effects throughout your entire health.

If you’ve been told your liver enzymes are “normal” but you still struggle with metabolic symptoms, a deeper assessment may help uncover what’s going on.

Worried because heart disease “runs in your family”?
Genes are not your destiny.

Many people believe that if heart attacks or clogged arteries (atherosclerosis) are part of their family history, developing heart disease is inevitable.
But genetics are not your destiny.
Having a family history simply means you may have a higher risk — not a guaranteed outcome.

Research shows that lifestyle factors like nutrition, movement, stress levels, sleep, and alcohol intake can influence how certain genes are expressed.

This means your daily choices can play a powerful role in protecting your heart and reducing long-term risk.

Here are 3 simple ways to support heart health starting today:

💚Eat a balanced, fibre-rich diet
Focus on whole foods, quality protein, healthy fats, and plenty of fibre to support cholesterol balance, blood sugar regulation, and overall cardiovascular health.

💚Increase fruits and vegetables
Packed with antioxidants, vitamins and fibre and nutrients that help reduce inflammation and support healthy blood vessels.

💚Reduce stress and alcohol intake
Chronic stress and excess alcohol can increase inflammation and strain the cardiovascular system — small sustainable changes can make a big difference over time.

Your heart health story is still being written — and you have more control than you may think.

CoQ10 for Heart Health: Why It Matters More in Midlife & Beyond

As we age, supporting heart health becomes increasingly important — and one nutrient that often deserves more attention is Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).

CoQ10 is a naturally occurring antioxidant that plays a key role in energy production inside your cells, especially in high-energy organs like the heart. Think of it as a “spark plug” that helps your cells produce the energy they need to function optimally.

Why CoQ10 is especially important in midlife and beyond:

✔️ Supports heart function
CoQ10 helps fuel the heart muscle, which requires significant energy to pump efficiently and maintain healthy circulation.

✔️ Antioxidant protection
It helps combat oxidative stress — a contributor to aging and cardiovascular concerns.

✔️ Energy and vitality
Many people notice improved energy levels since CoQ10 supports mitochondrial function (your cells’ energy factories).

Statins are commonly prescribed to help manage cholesterol levels, but they can also lower the body’s natural production of CoQ10. For some individuals, this reduction may contribute to side effects like muscle aches, fatigue, or reduced exercise tolerance.

Supplementing with CoQ10 may help support healthy levels and reduce these unwanted symptoms — which is why it’s often considered alongside statin therapy (always under guidance from a qualified healthcare provider).

We love NFH CoQ10 SAP - 3rd party tested for purity and potency.

Fatty liver disease is more common than many people realize — and it often develops silently without obvious symptoms.
Understanding what it is and how to support your liver early can make a powerful difference in your long-term metabolic and cardiovascular health. 🌿

Fatty liver (also called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or NAFLD or MASLD) occurs when excess fat accumulates in liver cells. While small amounts of fat are normal, too much can interfere with how the liver functions and may increase the risk of inflammation, insulin resistance, and heart disease over time.

Many factors can contribute, including:
✔️ Insulin resistance and blood sugar imbalance
✔️ High intake of processed foods, sugar, or refined carbohydrates
✔️ Elevated cholesterol or triglycerides
✔️ Hormonal changes (including perimenopause and menopause)
✔️ Sedentary lifestyle
✔️ Chronic stress and poor sleep

Fatty liver can affect anyone, but risk may be higher if you have:
• Midsection weight gain or features of metabolic syndrome
• Prediabetes or type 2 diabetes
• High cholesterol
• PCOS or hormonal imbalances
• A family history of metabolic conditions

At Sage Naturopathic Clinic, our approach focuses on addressing root causes and supporting the liver through evidence-informed, personalized care:

Nutrition support: Anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar-balancing strategies designed to reduce liver fat and support metabolism.

Targeted supplements: Specific nutrients and botanicals selected based on your health history and lab work to support liver detoxification pathways and metabolic function.

Lifestyle strategies: Movement, stress management, and sleep optimization to improve insulin sensitivity, hormone balance, and overall liver health.

Functional testing & individualized plans: We look at the bigger picture to create sustainable, realistic changes that work for your lifestyle and goals.

Fatty liver is often reversible with the right support — and early intervention can make a significant difference.

Let’s talk overwhelm, anxiety — and your metabolic and heart health. 💚

In midlife, hormone shifts can make stress feel more intense. But chronic stress doesn’t just affect your mood — it can also impact your metabolism and cardiovascular health. Elevated stress hormones like cortisol can influence blood sugar balance, increase inflammation, affect cholesterol levels, disrupt sleep, and contribute to weight changes and fatigue over time.

If you’re feeling frazzled, anxious or overwhelmed, can’t shut off your brain, or struggle with sleep, supporting your nervous system is an important part of protecting your long-term health.

Mental Calmness by Natural Factors features L-theanine — an amino acid that promotes mental calmness and relaxation without drowsiness. These chewables are quickly absorbed, helping you feel calm, centred, and ready for whatever the day brings. Best of all, you can take them as needed!
