One of the most common misconceptions that we hear around tongue ties is that they only need to be addressed if they are affecting feeding.
Severe ties will almost always impact feeding but babies with with mild to moderate ties may be able to compensate OR mom may be able to push through the pain, find positions to help baby compensate etc. and continue to breastfeed somewhat effectively.
Unfortunately when it comes to tongue function, the journey does not end with breastfeeding.
Poor tongue function can lead to issues with:
⭐️chewing and swallowing solid foods
⭐️speech development
⭐️jaw and dental development
⭐️airway development
⭐️gas, bloating and reflux
⭐️sleep (mouth breathing, snoring, sleep disordered breathing)
⭐️posture, TMJ problems, neck and back pain
Having an assessment of tongue FUNCTION, not just whether there is a restricted frenulum, by one of our experienced chiropractors can be very beneficial.
And the sooner the issues are addressed, whether that be via a release or bodywork, the less intervention your little one may need down the line.
Book an appointment with Dr. Tara or Dr. Jenn if you suspect that your little one may have a tongue tie!
