Everyone meet Jessica! She’s a first year physio student who will be working with Simone at BCA South and CSS Toronto for the next 6 weeks. She’s super excited to have my 1st placement here! In her free time, she enjoys dancing and making choreography, going to the gym, and trying out the many cafes/restaurants in the city.

Jessica knew she wanted to be a PT when she took a rehabilitation science course in undergrad and learned more about the scope of practice! The idea of playing a big role in someone’s recovery really appealed to her. Also, because of dance she’s always been a lover of learning about movement and the way our body works!

Everyone meet the newest member of the CheerMed team, Taylor! She is a passionate Athletic Therapist with a Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Therapy from Sheridan College and an additional Bachelor’s in Kinesiology from Wilfrid Laurier University. Over the years, she’s had the privilege of working with a variety of sports teams, including football, rugby, hockey, and cheerleading. You might recognize her from her role on the medical team at Cheer Evolution competitions!

As an advocate for holistic athletic performance, she believes that true excellence goes beyond physical strength. It encompasses mental well-being, thoughtful preparation, and intentional recovery. Her treatment approach is comprehensive, combining hands-on techniques with customized stretching and strengthening programs. Her mission is to help you reach your fullest potential, both on and off the mat.

When she’s not working, you’ll likely find her enjoying a walk with her dog, diving into a good book, or training with her team, Rebellion at PCT, as they embark on the journey to Worlds 2025!

You can book in with Taylor:
- Mondays & Wednesdays 4-9pm

It is important to know the risks and benefits of stretching ✅
Even though stretching helps with increase range of motion, flexibility and circulation🤸 The risk can involve pulling a muscle when stretching to the point of pain. Without incorporating strengthening as part of your stretching it can increase the risk of injury✖️

The shoulder joint is one of the most free range joints in the body, being that it is considered a "Ball in Socket" joint. Meaning it can move in a lot of different ranges.

This means it can actually be more susceptible to injuries, and strength can help prevent those injuries from happening✖

Specific to cheer, strength can help stabilize the joint when stunting and tumbling💪 But also assist in power for both stunting and tumbling🌟

Shoulder mobility is important in cheer specifically so we can accomplish all demands of the sport safely and effectively💪
In Cheer we need to have enough range to reach in stunting and tumbling without tightness or pain, as well as the mobility to pull those air positions flyers!

Sometimes if we don't have enough range of motion in our shoulders than our body tries to overcompensate in other aspects of the body which can cause other aches, pains and possible injuries.🚫

Mobility and strength are two very important components to have in the shoulders. Due to the joint formation in the shoulder, it allows us to move in many directions and without strength could increase our risk to injury.
✖️However, if we don't have enough flexibility in the shoulder it can limit the range we may need to accomplish our goals in our sport. Limited range can also cause risk of injury in other places such as your back
✖️The Balance between the two are very important to have for the safety of Cheerleading!

From our previous post, performing a squat can help with your stunts but the form of your squat is very important for ex*****on ✅. Keep following along to learn correct form in your squats, so you can be at your strongest 💪

It's ALL about the angles! Knees should be in line with your toes, not shooting infant or behind. Engage the quads, your knees should also be in line with your hips. As if your knees are at a 90 degree corner! If this isn't happening you aren't going low enough for your squat!

Think "Sitting down in a chair"
